General Description and Classification Standards

Performs IT systems installation, repair and preventative maintenance of personal computers and related systems. This is a Senior level position capable of carrying out most assignments.

Supervision Received

Direction received is very general and focuses on end results and is typically collaborative in nature. Makes decisions on technical issues, diagnoses, or procedures in collaboration with supervisors or managers.

Decision Making | Leadership Provided

Selects from multiple procedures and methods to accomplish tasks. May make purchasing or resource allocation decisions within organization guidelines. Applies organizational policies and may interpret organizational policies and recommend exceptions. Serves as a technical resource or mentor to other employees and may lead or instruct less experienced workers in high level or technical jobs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs installation, repair and preventative maintenance of personal computers and related systems that are moderately difficult and require judgment in resolving issues or making recommendations.
  • Assists in recommending software to meet user requirements.
  • Troubleshoots software and hardware failures.
  • Identifies network problems involving desktop or laptop computers.
  • Maintains inventory of equipment, hardware and software and supplies.
  • Troubleshoots, maintains and monitors external and internal drives, printers, plotters and scanners.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Applies knowledge and skills to complete a wide range of tasks.
  • Specialized knowledge of personal computers and related systems and networks and how they work.
  • Specialized knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
  • Skill in establishing networked computer systems and connecting peripheral office equipment.
  • Skill in installing wiring and other devices such as routers and modems to insure connect ability of system components.
  • Ability to resolve most issues without escalation.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers, peers and managers throughout the City.
Minimum Qualifications: Education and Experience

1. Associate’s degree in computer science.

2. At least four (4) years of work experience in desktop support.

Preferred Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field
  • 4 plus years’ work experience providing desktop support to organizational users.

Work Environment

Required physical and sensory capabilities to perform the job successfully. Typical environmental conditions associated with office work and in-person reporting as least 4-5 days per work.
