Job summary

Structural Designer II – Heavy Industrial Equipment, Skids & Hot Exhaust Ducting | $36–$40.50/Hour

Job Details

Key Responsibilities and Duties

• Create detailed 3D CAD models, fabrication drawings, and material take-offs for heavy industrial equipment, equipment skids, and ducting systems.
• Design hot exhaust and flue gas ducting, including casings, transitions, structural supports, plate components, and related assemblies.
• Develop structural layouts using typical industrial structural members and properly configured beam-to-column and equipment-support connections.
• Produce drawings for customer review, material procurement, shop fabrication, and equipment installation.
• Incorporate thermal expansion, operating temperature, mechanical loading, and fabrication requirements into designs.
• Design and coordinate equipment skids and supporting structural assemblies for industrial emissions-control equipment.
• Coordinate ducting and equipment interfaces with SCR reactors, baghouses, electrostatic precipitators, dampers, expansion joints, and related systems.
• Review engineering and project inputs for completeness and identify missing information, conflicts, or design discrepancies.
• Perform geometric and material calculations involving dimensions, areas, volumes, weights, angles, and material quantities.
• Prepare accurate bills of materials and material take-offs for purchasing and fabrication.
• Revise drawings based on engineering reviews, customer comments, fabrication feedback, and project changes.
• Coordinate with Engineering, Project Management, Sales, manufacturing teams, and outside stakeholders throughout project execution.
• Interpret P&IDs and incorporate process requirements into equipment and ducting layouts.
• Apply knowledge of industrial welding practices, structural connections, and fabrication limitations when developing designs.
• Follow document-control requirements for drawing releases, revisions, file management, and project records.
• Support continuous improvements to design standards, templates, drawing quality, and execution efficiency.

Qualifications Needed

• Associate degree in Computer-Aided Design, Drafting, Engineering Technology, Mechanical Design, or a related discipline.
• Minimum 3–5 years of industrial structural or mechanical design experience.
• Strong hands‑on proficiency with Autodesk Inventor for 3D modeling and detailed drawing development.
• Experience designing heavy industrial equipment, rather than primarily commercial construction or light-industrial components.
• Strong background designing with structural steel members, including an understanding of beam‑to‑column connections, equipment supports, frames, and load‑bearing assemblies.
• Experience designing equipment skids, structural frames, or packaged industrial equipment.
• Experience producing fabrication‑ready drawings for industrial ductwork, structural platework, or process equipment.
• Ability to create accurate material take-offs and bills of materials from 3D models and fabrication drawings.
• Understanding of industrial welding practices, fabrication processes, and shop constraints.
• Ability to perform geometric and material calculations involving dimensions, weights, areas, volumes, and angles.
• Experience interpreting engineering drawings, specifications, and P&IDs.
• Exposure to elevated‑temperature equipment, thermal expansion, hot exhaust ducting, or flue gas systems is strongly preferred.
• Familiarity with SCR systems, baghouses, electrostatic precipitators, or other pollution‑control equipment is helpful but not required.
• Proficiency with document control, drawing revisions, and technical file‑management procedures.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel less than 5%.
• No professional license or additional certification is required.
