Job summary

HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, VA is seeking an engineer to design components or portions of systems and modify existing designs to improve products and facilitate manufacturing. You will use CAD/CAM tools such as NX and CATIA to develop proposals.

Coordinate design criteria with engineering, manufacturing, tooling and planning teams, ensure manufacturability, and present sketches or layouts. Associate's Degree with 6 years of relevant experience is required.

• Equivalent to Associate's Degree: NNS Apprentice School graduate.
• NNPS graduate may substitute for the degree.
• High School/GED with 2 years related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience.
• High School/GED with 4 years non-related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience.

The Role

Designs components or portions of systems and modifies existing designs to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations. Utilizes computer-aided design equipment and/or graphic tools such as, CAD, CAM, NX, or CATIA. Gathers information, makes studies, computes calculations, and prepares original rough layouts, sketches to present design proposal. Coordinates design criteria with engineering, manufacturing, tooling, material, and planning group such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials, and contractual specifications. Exclude classifications in which incumbents predominantly perform drafting assignments.

• Ability to manage the catalog request submittals from various internal NNS customers
• Good communication skills
• Experience working with Siemens and IT
• Knowledge of EVMS (earned value management system)
• Detail oriented
• Catalog expert that is able to train new employees

Must Have

Associate's Degree and 6 years of relevant experience

One of the following may be used as equivalent to Associate's Degree to meet minimum qualifications:

• NNS Apprentice School graduate
• Navy Nuclear Power School (NNPS) graduate
• High School/GED and 2 years of related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience
• High School/GED and 4 years of non-related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience

Experience With The Following Areas Is Desired

• strong leadership and organizational skills
• strong knowledge of the PLM part catalog in NX
• PLM testing experinece (NX and Teamcenter) including NX configuration and set up files
• strong customer relation skills
