Job summary

HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding is seeking a design engineer to develop major components and improve manufacturing processes for naval systems. You will create initial layouts, evaluate materials, and coordinate with cross-functional teams to ensure designs meet specifications.

Requires design education with progressive experience; you will contribute to high-stakes projects and join a team building the Navy’s carriers and submarines, with competitive pay and comprehensive benefits.

Qualifications

• Design Apprentice certification or Associate's degree in Design with 6 years of applicable, progressive professional and/or supervisory work experience.
• Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline plus 4 years of applicable, progressive professional and/or supervisory work experience;
• Master's degree in a relevant discipline and 2 years of applicable experience.

Responsibilities

• Design major components or major portions of a functional system to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operation.
• Develops basic data and makes preliminary layouts, sketches, and notes necessary to present design proposal.
• Investigate pertinent design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials and equipment, interchangeability, replaceability, strength-weight efficiency, and contractual specification requirements and cost.
• Coordinate with other organizations affected by design development.
• Make layouts of complex assemblies and details parts of devices, mechanisms, and structures.
• Check completed layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications, and accuracy of calculations and dimensioning.
• Identify design errors, omissions, and other deficiencies, and recommends revisions and/or improvements in design layout to responsible engineers or designers.

The Role
