Job summary

Ingalls Shipbuilding in Avondale, LA is seeking a piping design engineer to design components or portions of piping systems and modify existing designs to improve products and support manufacturing operations. Qualifications

• Must have a high school diploma or GED with 10 years of experience or an associate degree with 6 years of experience.
• Experience checking 3D models and 2D drawings in a naval or large-scale manufacturing setting.
• Proficiency with AUTOCAD and Ship Constructor; familiarity with NAVISWORKS and Siemens NX is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Design components or portions of piping systems and modify designs to improve products and manufacturing.
• Coordinate design criteria with engineering, manufacturing, tooling, materials, and planning groups.
• Prepare rough layouts and sketches and present design proposals for review.
• Lead or mentor lower-level staff and serve as a resource for problem resolution.

The Role

Designs components or portions of Piping systems and modifies existing designs to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations. Utilizes computer-aided design equipment and/or graphic tools such as, AUTOCAD, SHIP CONSTRUCTOR and NAVISWORKS. Gathers information, makes studies, computes calculations, and prepares original rough layouts, sketches to present design proposal. Coordinates design criteria with engineering, manufacturing, tooling, material, and planning group such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials, and contractual specifications. Exclude classifications in which incumbents predominantly perform drafting assignments. Extensive knowledge in specialized functions. A wide and comprehensive acquaintance with, and understanding of, both general and specific aspects of the job and their practical application to complex problems and situations ordinarily encountered. Minimal supervision. Work may be done without established procedures. May assist in orienting, training, assigning and checking the work of lower level employees. Often designated as lead worker. Duties & tasks are varied and complex. Serves as a resource to others in the resolution of problems and issues. Contacts are frequent with individuals representing outside organizations, and/or individuals of significant importance within the company. Contacts involve planning and preparation of the communications, require skill, tact, persuasion and/or negotiation to accomplish the objectives of the communication.

Must Have

High School Diploma/GED and 10 years of experience

Associates Degree or other 2 year technical degree in related discipline and 6 years experience

Nice to Have

High level of experience/efficiency for both AUTOCAD and SHIP CONSTRUCTOR. Primary function will be checking 3D Models, 2D Drawings and Siemens NX for VWI - Virtual Work Instructions. Preferred but not required, high level of profiency working P1 Weld Joints and Pipe Details.
