Job summary

HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding Division seeks a design engineer to create piping system components and modify existing designs using AUTOCAD, SHIP CONSTRUCTOR and NAVISWORKS. You will gather data, perform calculations, and prepare rough layouts for proposal.

Work involves coordinating criteria with engineering, manufacturing, tooling and planning teams, ensuring manufacturability and contract compliance under limited supervision.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma/GED and 7 years of experience.
• Associates Degree or other 2 year technical degree in related discipline and 3 years experience.

Responsibilities

• Designs components or portions of piping systems and modifies existing designs to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations.
• Utilizes CAD tools such as AUTOCAD, SHIP CONSTRUCTOR and NAVISWORKS.
• Coordinates design criteria with engineering, manufacturing, tooling, material, and planning groups for ease of manufacture, material availability, and contractual specifications.
• Maintains understanding of general and detailed aspects of the job and applies them to routine and new lines of work.

The Role

Designs components or portions of Piping systems and modifies existing designs to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations. Utilizes computer-aided design equipment and/or graphic tools such as, AUTOCAD, SHIP CONSTRUCTOR and NAVISWORKS. Gathers information, makes studies, computes calculations, and prepares original rough layouts, sketches to present design proposal. Coordinates design criteria with engineering, manufacturing, tooling, material, and planning group such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials, and contractual specifications. Exclude classifications in which incumbents predominantly perform drafting assignments. Full considerable knowledge of the job. Complete acquaintance with and understanding of the general and detailed aspects of the job, and their practical applications to problems and situations ordinarily encountered. Limited supervision. No instructions needed on routine work, and general instructions given on new lines of work or special assignments. Duties & tasks are varied and moderately complex. Resolves most questions and problems, and refers complex questions to higher levels.Contacts are frequent with individuals representing other departments, and/or representing outside organizations. Contacts involve obtaining or providing information or data on matters of moderate importance to the function of the department or which may be of sensitive nature.

Must Have

Nice to Have

Proficient in utilization of AUTOCAD and SHIP CONSTRUCTOR for the purpose of supporting design and extraction/development of new drawings or Siemens NX for generating VWI - Virtual Work Instructions.
