Job description

To lead the design and execution of thoughtfully curated residential interiors that reflect the timeless aesthetic and elevated level of service synonymous with Kate Marker Interiors. As an Experienced Designer, you will guide projects from initial concept through final installation, balancing creativity, technical expertise, client relationships, and exceptional attention to detail.

Role Overview

As an Experienced Designer, you will take an active role in the development and execution of residential interior design projects. You will work closely with Kate, our design team, clients, architects, builders, vendors, and trade partners to create beautiful, functional, and highly personalized homes.

We are seeking an accomplished designer with 5+ years of professional residential interior design experience who is confident independently managing projects and client relationships while maintaining a strong creative point of view.

This role requires someone who can see both the big picture and the smallest details. The ideal candidate is creative, organized, decisive, collaborative, and comfortable taking ownership of projects while working within the overall Kate Marker Interiors aesthetic and design process.

Key Responsibilities
Design & Project Development

Lead residential interior design projects through all phases, from initial concept and space planning through final installation and styling.

Develop cohesive design concepts, furniture plans, material palettes, custom details, and finish selections that reflect each client's lifestyle, architecture, and project goals.

Source and specify furniture, lighting, plumbing, textiles, artwork, accessories, and architectural finishes.

Create detailed and visually compelling client presentations in Keynote.

Develop and maintain floor plans, elevations, and design drawings in AutoCAD.

Ensure designs remain aligned with project scope, budget, schedule, and the overall design vision.

Client & Project Management

Serve as a primary point of contact for clients throughout the design process, developing strong relationships built on trust, communication, and exceptional service.

Lead client presentations and confidently communicate design concepts, recommendations, selections, and decisions.

Manage multiple active projects simultaneously while maintaining organization, accuracy, and forward momentum.

Anticipate project needs, identify potential challenges, and proactively develop solutions.

Maintain accurate project information, specifications, selections, and documentation within Studio Designer.

Technical & Trade Coordination

Collaborate closely with architects, builders, contractors, workrooms, vendors, and trade partners throughout the design and construction process.

Review architectural drawings and construction documents and provide detailed interior design direction.

Develop and communicate custom cabinetry, millwork, built-ins, furniture, and other design details.

Attend site meetings and conduct regular project site visits to ensure design intent is carried through construction and installation.

Lead and participate in furniture installations, styling, and final project completion.

Coordinate closely with Procurement, Warehouse, and Operations to ensure furnishings and materials are ready for successful installations.

Oversee final styling and detailing to ensure every completed space meets the Kate Marker Interiors standard.

Work collaboratively with fellow Designers, Junior Designers, Procurement, Operations, and Warehouse teams to move projects efficiently from concept through completion.

Communicate project needs clearly and proactively across departments.

Work effectively within a collaborative studio environment while maintaining ownership and accountability for assigned projects.

Contribute positively to the culture, creativity, and overall success of the Kate Marker Interiors team.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Interior Design, Interior Architecture, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of professional residential interior design experience, preferably within a high-end residential design firm.
  • Demonstrated experience independently managing residential design projects from concept through installation.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Keynote.
  • Strong space planning, furniture specification, material selection, and construction knowledge.
  • Experience reviewing architectural drawings and developing detailed floor plans, elevations, and design documentation.
  • Strong understanding of custom cabinetry, millwork, lighting, plumbing, textiles, furnishings, and architectural finishes.
  • Exceptional client-facing communication and presentation skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities with the capacity to successfully manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to balance creative vision with budgets, schedules, and project requirements.
  • Confidence working independently while remaining highly collaborative within a team environment.

Full-time / In-person Role in Barrington only. No hybrid or remote considered.

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with Studio Designer is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working on custom homes, renovations, and large‑scale furnishing projects.
