Job description

Build the design system that powers Instagram at consumer scale. As a Design Systems Product Designer at Instagram, you will set the vision and strategic direction for how the system scales quality across surfaces. This onsite role in San Francisco, CA focuses on driving initiatives spanning component systems, spec-to-code alignment, documentation, and an evolving AI knowledge layer, with leadership that helps adoption spread across design and the broader product group.

Compensation: USD 201,000 - 278,000 per year. Experience: 10+ years.

What you’ll do
  • Identify, shape, and drive critical initiatives for Instagram’s Design System.
  • Design scalable, composable component systems that support consistent delivery across surfaces.
  • Close and maintain the gap between design spec and shipped code through ongoing spec-to-code alignment.
  • Evolve the AI knowledge layer so system knowledge stays useful for AI-native workflows and tooling.
  • Hold the craft bar for systematic design across your workstreams.
  • Drive adoption through influence and organizational leadership, including alignment across design and product.
  • Build out new patterns in partnership with product teams.
  • Contribute to design tooling and workflow improvements that accelerate on-system work.
  • Build measurement approaches that demonstrate system value through evidence.
  • Shape product group direction beyond design, using institutional knowledge of how Meta builds products to move initiatives forward.
  • Lobby for new ideas while navigating organizational complexity to get things done that few others can.
What you bring
  • 10+ years of product design experience, including leading design system initiatives at consumer scale (component libraries, design tokens, documentation, or governance) with broad organizational impact.
  • A portfolio demonstrating systems thinking and craft, including component design, pattern libraries, cross-platform adaptation, and/or design tooling.
  • Deep experience designing for large-scale consumer products, where consistency across many surfaces and engineers is a real challenge, plus recognized leadership across design and the broader product group.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify opportunities and create systems that scale, with sound decisions on abstraction, composability, and quality that held up in real product development.
  • Strong partnership with engineering on component APIs, code architecture, and spec-to-code alignment, understanding the translation layer between design intent and implementation.
  • Comfort with AI-native workflows and tooling, either through direct experience building systems for AI agents or through strong intuition for structuring design knowledge for machine readability.
  • Experience measuring adoption and quality, helping build the business case for system investment with evidence.
  • Cross-platform experience (iOS, Android, responsive), including how platform design languages evolve and how systems accommodate that evolution, with particular familiarity with Android design patterns and development workflows.
  • Coding experience is a plus, especially comfort working within token infrastructure (token values, naming, semantic structures) in collaboration with engineering.
  • A track record of investing in design workflow improvements such as maintaining Figma libraries, building presentation decks, and developing documentation templates that raise quality and efficiency.
Technologies you’ll work with
  • iOS, Android, iPad, foldables
  • AI-native tooling
  • Figma
  • Design tokens
Preferred qualifications
  • Ability to integrate AI tools to optimize or redesign workflows with measurable impact (efficiency gains, quality improvements).
  • Experience with responsible, ethical AI practices such as risk assessment, bias mitigation, and quality and accuracy reviews.
  • Ongoing AI skill development (prompt/context engineering, agent orchestration) and staying current with emerging AI technologies.
