Job summary

Shive-Hattery, a full-service architecture and engineering firm, seeks an entry-level Civil Engineer – Design Professional in our Industrial Development group in Iowa City. You will support projects from concept through completion, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to deliver thoughtful, high-quality solutions.

The role emphasizes learning, adherence to detailed instructions, and assisting with client development and marketing efforts.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Proficiency with foundational engineering tools (AutoCAD, Excel – basic).
• Familiarity with discipline-specific analysis or modeling software (introductory level).
• Ability to follow detailed instructions and learn standard practices.

Responsibilities

• Assist in routine engineering tasks under close supervision.
• Illustrate and document calculations and designs as directed.
• Support team with standard drafting and modeling tasks.
• Contribute to development of selected clients through marketing support.
• Perform discrete portions of broader assignments with limited leadership responsibilities.
• Collaborate with team to deliver high-quality solutions.

What You’ll Do

• Entry level of professional work requiring a bachelor’s degree in engineering and no experience, or equivalent

• Performs a variety of routine tasks to gain familiarity with engineering staff, methods, practices, and programs
• Performs specific and limited portions of broader assignments
• Usually assumes no responsibility for direction of others
• May assist in development of selected clients through marketing

This position is primarily performed in an office or hybrid environment and may require travel to project sites, other Shive-Hattery office locations or to meet with clients. A full clean driver’s license is required. The role involves sitting, standing, and working at a computer for extended periods. May also require lifting light to medium weight objects of up to 50 lbs., the wearing of PPE and navigating active construction sites.
