Role Summary
The Design Manager is responsible for the successful delivery of projects by organizing the design teams, trade partners, process, and technology when projects utilize design-build, design assist, or other alternate delivery methods. This position requires proactive management of the design process with all parties to ensure coordinated documents that support the project goals. All activities will be performed in support of the strategy, vision, and values of JE Dunn.

Key Role Responsibilities - Core
DESIGN MANAGEMENT FAMILY – CORE
- Interpret formal design build RFPs and develop work plans, collaborating with preconstruction, operations, and other key stakeholders.
- Understand potential client’s business needs and help create conceptual plans, elevations, 3D models for support of presentations and win strategies.
- Review and understand bridging documents for project compliance with RFP, including comprehension of Codes and Criteria to meet the technical requirements and design deliverables.
- Support early phase basic due diligence activities with clients and key stakeholders to ensure professional studies, jurisdictional & permitting requirements are incorporated into design documents.
- Manage outside design consultants, assuring they meet the technical and schedule requirements for design deliverables.
- Manage the design review process with the design team and clients to ensure schedules are met and identify project risks and opportunities throughout the design phase.
- Leverage design experiences and knowledge to work with project teams, identifying solutions to project-specific challenges while monitoring expectations for design schedules, quality control, and content for design document delivery.
- Generate cost savings and value-added solutions during the design phase.
- Monitor and control our design partner’s and consultants’ costs.
- Review design and provide quality control review comments to ensure program specifications and life-safety requirements are met.
- Coordinate the design document packaging strategies with the project team.
- Manage project documentation such as proposals, drawings, specifications, reports, calculations, and shop drawings using both 3D and 2D file management systems.
- Capable of developing sketches and plans to assist preconstruction with pricing of conceptual ideas. Coordinate with VDC team to develop and implement projects as needed.
- Provide technical design guidance throughout the entire construction process.
- Provide design engineering support for the entire project lifecycle (proposal, site survey, engineering, equipment selection, permitting, training, and construction).
- Understand the project budget and steer the project accordingly, ensuring the design stays within contractual details.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Ability to perform work accurately, completely, and in a timely manner.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills – Intermediate level.
- Ability to conduct effective presentations.
- Proficiency in MS Office – Intermediate level.
- Thorough knowledge of project processes and how each supports successful project completion.
- Ability to build relationships and collaborate within a team, both internally and externally.
- Ability to apply Lean processes and philosophy – Intermediate level.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD, Revit, and/or Google SketchUp.
- Experience with U.S. building design codes and material-specific standards.
- Knowledge of linked design disciplines, e.g., Geotechnical/Civil, Architecture, Building Façade, Structural, MEP, Data/Communications, Vertical Transportation, Acoustics, and Fire and Life Safety.
- Ability to think in a highly structured manner across all design disciplines while also developing specialized solutions.
- Ability to manage budget and schedule, maximize profitability, and generate future work through building relationships.
- Ability to build relationships that transcend individual projects.
- Knowledge of materials, fasteners, grating, and other architectural steel components, and research capabilities for new materials.
- Extensive experience in structural and miscellaneous steel detailing, understanding industry practices, terminology, and conventions.
- Ability to interpret complex engineering drawings, including plans, elevations, sections, and connection details.
- Understanding of standards and regulations governing steel detailing (e.g., AISC, AWS, NAAMM, NOMMA, OSHA).
- Knowledge of fabrication and erection processes for steel components, including shop practices and welding procedures.
- Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy in reviewing steel drawings.
- Ability to identify errors and recommend corrective actions to ensure quality and integrity of deliverables.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering, or related field (Preferred).
- Equivalent relevant experience will be considered in lieu of degree.
Experience
- 5+ years of design and/or construction management experience (Preferred).
- Cross-disciplinary knowledge of key engineering disciplines and trades.
- Familiarity with 3D modeling software like Tekla Structures for reviewing models (Preferred).
Working Environment
- Valid and unrestricted driver’s license required.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds.
- May require extensive travel.
- Willing to work non-traditional hours as needed.
- Exposure to extreme conditions possible.
- Location may include project sites or office.
- Frequent activity: Sitting, viewing computer screen.
- Occasional activity: Standing, walking, bending, climbing, reaching, pushing, pulling.
