Job Description - Design Engineer (Transportation Engineer) I, II or III: Georgetown Area Office (Austin District) (2501350)

Position Overview

TxDOT's Austin District is seeking a Design Engineer (Transportation Engineer) I, II, or III in our Georgetown Area Office. This role involves transportation engineering work across various functional areas such as planning, project development, design, construction, and traffic operations. The position requires ensuring compliance with federal and state laws, policies, standards, and guidelines, and involves interaction with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices with minimal supervision.

Compensation

Salary Plan/Grade:

  • Design Engineer/Transportation Engineer I: B24 ($65,104 - $106,634/year)
  • Design Engineer/Transportation Engineer II: B25 ($69,572 - $114,099/year)
  • Design Engineer/Transportation Engineer III: B26 ($76,530 - $129,430/year)

Minimum Salary: $65,104; Maximum Salary: $129,430; Pay Basis: Yearly; FLSA Status: Exempt

Work Details

  • Location: Georgetown, TX
  • Travel: Yes, approximately 5%
  • Shift: Day, 40 hours/week, Monday-Friday
  • Work Environment: Onsite

Essential Duties

  • Analyze and approve modifications to highway maintenance contracts.
  • Oversee traffic control plans during construction and review traffic devices.
  • Review shop drawings for bridges and structures.
  • Assist in developing and letting maintenance contracts.
  • Support design computer operations and plan preparation.
  • Coordinate and monitor projects and plans.
  • Collaborate on design schematics, traffic studies, and ITS plans.
  • Coordinate with various entities on project phases, revisions, and documentation.
  • Travel to project sites for on-site reviews and technical support.
  • Monitor consultant progress, review invoices, and prepare agreements.
  • Review PS&E submissions, specifications, and estimates.

Additional Duties by Level

Level II: Coordinate with Area Engineers, negotiate fees, oversee traffic plans, perform complex design work, and monitor contractors.

Level III: Conduct advanced planning, review and revise designs, and provide technical support on-site.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related field.
  • Valid driver’s license; ability to drive state vehicles.
  • Professional Engineer license; if out-of-state, must obtain Texas PE within six months.

Core Competencies

  • Knowledge of plans, specifications, construction policies, and design methods.
  • Ability to perform basic and complex engineering calculations.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

  • Lift up to 20 lbs, climb ladders, stand for extended periods.
  • Wear protective gear and work in various weather conditions.
  • Pre-employment physical and drug test required.
