Design Engineer (Transportation Engineer) I, II, III or IV: Georgetown Area Office (Austin District)

Position Overview

This position involves transportation engineering work in areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, and traffic operations and maintenance. The role requires ensuring compliance with federal and state laws, policies, and standards, with contact with government officials and private entities. Employees follow standard practices with minimal supervision.

Essential Duties
  • Analyze and approve modifications to highway maintenance contracts.
  • Oversee construction project traffic control plans and review traffic control devices.
  • Review shop drawings for bridges and structures.
  • Assist in developing and letting maintenance contracts.
  • Support design computer operations and plan preparation.
  • Coordinate and monitor projects and programs.
  • Work on design schematics, capacity studies, and ITS plans.
  • Coordinate design phases with various entities and review engineering documents.
  • Travel to project sites for reviews and technical support.
  • Monitor consultant contracts and progress.
  • Review PS&E submissions and other specifications.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned, including driving for the state.
Additional Duties by Level

Level II: Coordinate with Area Engineers, review contract submissions, oversee traffic plans, perform complex design work, interpret manuals, and monitor contractor compliance.

Level III: Conduct advanced planning, on-site reviews, revise designs, and review change orders and estimates.

Level IV: Serve as project manager, liaise with various agencies, coordinate utility and legal matters, and monitor contracts.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's in engineering or related science; higher degrees accepted.

Experience:

  • Level I: 4 years
  • Level II: 5 years
  • Level III: 6 years
  • Level IV: 7 years

Experience can be full-time or prorated part-time; related graduate education may substitute experience on a year-for-year basis.

Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Professional Engineer license; out-of-state PE license holders must obtain Texas PE within 6 months.
Competencies
  • Highway construction design, plans review, construction policies, phasing, and cost estimation.
  • Applying engineering principles, basic design/drafting, and maintaining effective relationships.
  • Logical problem-solving and decision-making.
Physical and Working Conditions
  • Lift up to 20 lbs, climb ladders, stand for long periods, wear protective gear, work in extreme temperatures, and perform data analysis.
Employment Conditions
  • Pre-employment physical and drug testing required.
  • Compliance with DOT drug and alcohol regulations, including restrictions on medical marijuana.

Salary: Ranges vary by level, e.g., Engineer I: $65,104 - $106,634/year.
