Job summary

Samuel, Son & Co. is seeking a Design Engineer to develop engineered documents and liaise across departments to coordinate complex projects beyond standard customer requirements. The role emphasizes timely, accurate delivery and adherence to applicable codes and specifications.

You will monitor project status from inception to shipment, resolve customer discrepancies, and coordinate with outside agencies, while supporting engineering process improvements and design services for customers.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field, or an associate degree in mechanical with 5 years experience.
• Proficient CAD knowledge (AutoDesk Inventor preferred).
• Ability to interpret ASME code and customer specs.
• Basic statics knowledge and design calculations; experience with pressure vessel software.
• Experience with IFS or similar ERP system.
• Understanding of shop equipment and machinery capabilities.
• Welding knowledge and symbols.
• Materials selection and part numbering expertise.
• Fundamental fabrication methods knowledge.

Responsibilities

• Develop engineered documents (drawings, BOMs, routings) reflecting customer needs and codes.
• Monitor project status from inception to shipment and report delays.
• Communicate with customers to resolve spec discrepancies and update on progress.
• Coordinate involvement of outside agencies and approve documents, inspections.
• Assist Engineering Manager with special projects and process improvements.

The Design Engineer will be involved with products outside the scope of normal customer requirements and will act as a liaison between necessary Samuel departments and personnel to ensure all facets of such projects are coordinated and completed in a timely and accurate manner.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Develop engineered documents (drawings, calculations, bills of materials, routings, etc) that reflect the needs of the customer and comply with all applicable codes and specifications.
• Monitor and report status of project from inception to shipment and report any delays to the Engineering Manager.
• Communicate with the customer to resolve discrepancies in specifications and keep customer advised of project status.
• Coordinate (either directly or via the customer) the involvement of any necessary outside agencies and include receipt of any necessary document approvals, coordination of on-site inspection visits, etc.
• Assist Engineering Manager with special projects including Engineering process improvements, customer design services, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or related field or Associates Degree in Mechanical field with 5 years of experience

• Welding: Must have a basic understanding of the welding processes utilized at Samuel. This would include application of processes, process characteristics, and representation of necessary welds with appropriate symbols.
