Job summary

Samuel Automation is seeking a design-focused Mechanical Engineer to create custom automated equipment for contract specs, leveraging a broad range of components and subsystems. You’ll work with pneumatics, lasers, vision systems, and motion platforms to meet customer commitments.

Applicants should have a BS Mechanical Engineering (BSME preferred) and 3–7 years of solid modeling experience (SolidWorks preferred) in industrial automation; travel to customer sites may be required, and mentoring

Qualifications

  • 3–7 years in solid modeling in industrial automation.
  • Willingness to travel to customer sites.

Responsibilities

  • Create custom automated equipment designs to contract specifications and applicable design standards while meeting material budget requirements.
  • Perform engineering calculations with respect to strength of materials, speeds, horsepower, temperature, pressure, force, etc. as related to machine and tool designs.
  • Analyze drawings and specifications to determine shape, dimensions, hardness, etc. in the development of equipment, processes and products.
  • Examine feasibility of using one or more machines to carry out sequential operations.
  • Provide technical direction and support to Machine Builders and Technicians during debugging.
  • Mentor junior designers.
  • Work with engineering and project managers to report status, raise issues, and assist where able.
  • Participate in regular project status updates with project team and customers.

Job description

As a key member of the Samuel Automation’s Engineering team, you design custom automated manufacturing systems to meet our customers’ manufacturing commitments. You are responsible for designing, selecting and integrating a broad spectrum of components and sub systems. Your specialties may include pneumatics, fluid dispensing systems, vibratory feeders, lasers, vision systems and motion systems.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Create custom automated equipment designs to contract specifications and applicable design standards while meeting material budget requirement
  • Perform engineering calculations with respect to strength of materials, speeds, horsepower, temperature, pressure, force, etc. as related to machine and tool designs.
  • Analyzes drawings, and specifications to determine shape, dimensions, hardness etc. in the development of equipment, processes and products.
  • Examine feasibility of using one or more machines to carry out sequential operations.

  • Mentor junior designers

Level of Autonomy and Authority

  • Works without detailed supervision, but within clear guidelines, defined standards and specifications. Difficult, complex or unusual matters are referred to more senior authority
  • May guide and monitor the work of other staff working on a project basis
  • Provides input and makes recommendations to management in areas of improvement

Key Requirements

  • Post-Secondary education in Engineering, specializing in Mechanical Design or equivalent (BSME degree is preferred)
  • 3-7 years' experience in solid modeling (Solidworks is preferred) in industrial automation with the proven ability to design and detail machined and fabricated parts to ANSI standards.
  • May be required to travel to customer sites to assess requirements in person from time to time.
