Job summary

Samuel Automation is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to craft custom automated equipment for diverse manufacturing tasks. You will design, analyze, and refine components and subsystems, ensuring they meet contract specs and ANSI standards.

You will mentor junior designers, collaborate with project managers, and present updates to customers. SolidWorks proficiency and strong communication skills are essential for success in an agile environment.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary engineering education in mechanical design or equivalent (BSME preferred).
  • 3–7 years of solid modeling experience in industrial automation, with proficiency in designing and detailing machined/fabricated parts to ANSI standards.
  • Ability to travel to customer sites as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Create custom automated equipment designs to contract specs and applicable design standards while meeting material budgets.
  • Perform engineering calculations related to strength, speeds, horsepower, temperature, pressure and force for machine designs.
  • Analyze drawings and specs to determine shape, dimensions and materials.
  • Evaluate feasibility of sequential machine operations and provide technical direction during debugging.
  • Mentor junior designers and coordinate with project managers on status and issues.

Job description

As a key member of the Samuel Automation’s Engineering team, you design custom automated manufacturing systems to meet our customers’ manufacturing commitments. You are responsible for designing, selecting and integrating a broad spectrum of components and sub systems. Your specialties may include pneumatics, fluid dispensing systems, vibratory feeders, lasers, vision systems and motion systems.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Create custom automated equipment designs to contract specifications and applicable design standards while meeting material budget requirement
  • Perform engineering calculations with respect to strength of materials, speeds, horsepower, temperature, pressure, force, etc. as related to machine and tool designs.
  • Analyzes drawings, and specifications to determine shape, dimensions, hardness etc. in the development of equipment, processes and products.
  • Examine feasibility of using one or more machines to carry out sequential operations.
  • Provide technical direction and support to Machine Builders and Technicians throughout the debugging phase
  • Mentor junior designers
  • Work with engineering and project managers to report status, raise issues, and assist where able.
  • Participates in regular project status updates with project team and customers

  • Proficiently able to use SolidWorks and current office computer software

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in the English language
Level of Autonomy and Authority
  • Works without detailed supervision, but within clear guidelines, defined standards and specifications. Difficult, complex or unusual matters are referred to more senior authority
  • May guide and monitor the work of other staff working on a project basis
  • Provides input and makes recommendations to management in areas of improvement
Key Requirements
  • Post-Secondary education in Engineering, specializing in Mechanical Design or equivalent (BSME degree is preferred)
  • 3-7 years' experience in solid modeling (Solidworks is preferred) in industrial automation with the proven ability to design and detail machined and fabricated parts to ANSI standards.
  • May be required to travel to customer sites to assess requirements in person from time to time.
