Job summary

Standard Industries in Fargo, ND is seeking an experienced design engineer to join our team. You will research and design a variety of custom metal projects in agriculture, industrial and structural fields, and oversee manufacturing through final build.

The ideal candidate has a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Structural Engineering and 3+ years in mechanical design, with proficiency in SolidWorks and Tekla. Knowledge of fabrication processes and GD&T is essential for this role.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Structural Engineering or related field
  • 3+ years experience in mechanical design
  • Knowledge of the metal fabrication process
  • Knowledge of SolidWorks 3D CAD software/Tekla or similar
  • Understanding of common material grades (A36, A572, A500, stainless, aluminum) and their fabrication behavior
  • Working knowledge of welding symbols (AWS A2.4), GD&T, and fabrication tolerances

Responsibilities

  • Design sheet metal, plate, and fabricated steel components, weldments, and assemblies from concept through release
  • Produce detailed 3D models, fabrication drawings, and shop details with complete weld callouts, tolerances, and finish specifications
  • Develop flat patterns, bend allowances and geometry that respects shop equipment capabilities
  • Support structural design work — skids, frames, platforms, ladders, guardrails, equipment supports, and structural steel
  • Read and interpret blueprint drawings
  • Be able to manage projects from start to finish
  • Communicate with office and shop staff
  • Provide continuous input towards the improvement of the manufacturing process

Job description

Standard Industries is seeking an experienced, driven and organized design engineer to join our team. In this position you will research and design a wide variety of custom metal projects in the agriculture, industrial & structural field. You will be responsible for carrying out the duties of the engineering department, including 3D modeling, blueprints, research and documentation. You will oversee manufacturing of projects through final build. You will also be responsible for improving the efficiency and performance of existing processes and products. To succeed you will need to be able to work in a fast-paced environment while providing strong problem-solving skills. Experience with structural steel design is a strong plus and will open the door to a broader range of projects.

Responsibilities and skills:
  • Design sheet metal, plate, and fabricated steel components, weldments, and assemblies from concept through release

  • Develop flat patterns, bend allowances and geometry that respects shop equipment capabilities (press brake, laser/plasma, rolls)
  • Support structural design work — skids, frames, platforms, ladders, guardrails, equipment supports, and structural steel — under applicable codes
  • Read and interpret blueprint drawings
  • Be able to manage projects from start to finish
  • Communicate with office and shop staff
  • Knowledge of engineering process
  • Proficiency in MS excel and word
  • Provide continuous input towards the improvement of the manufacturing process

Preferred:
  • Structural design experience under AISC 360, AWS D1.1, and/or applicable building codes
  • Experience with FEA tools (SolidWorks Simulation, ANSYS, or similar)
