Job summary

The Champion GSE is seeking an Engineering Manager in Springfield, Ohio, to provide technical leadership for weldment and machined mechanical assemblies and custom fabrication projects. You will guide design, drafting, and documentation, review drawings, BOMs, and ensure GD&T, tolerances, and weld symbols are properly applied.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field.
  • Minimum 7 years of mechanical design, fabrication, or custom equipment engineering.
  • Minimum 3 years of engineering supervision or technical leadership.
  • Strong working knowledge of welded steel and aluminum structures, machined components, and mechanical assemblies.
  • Experience with MIG/TIG welding and fabrication processes.
  • Proficiency in interpreting and producing detailed drawings.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the engineering team in designing welded and machined mechanical assemblies and structural fabrications.
  • Direct the creation and review of 3D models, fabrication drawings, BOMs, and technical documentation.
  • Ensure GD&T, tolerances, weld symbols, material specs, and surface finishes are applied.
  • Evaluate designs for load paths, rigidity, stress concentrations, and manufacturability.
  • Review and approve calculations for structural integrity, weld sizing, and fastener selection.
  • Provide material selection guidance for steel and aluminum applications.
  • Collaborate with fabrication and machining teams to address process limitations and assembly methods.
  • Support design-for-manufacture and design-for-assembly activities to improve quality and lead time.
  • Manage engineering change control, drawing revisions, and release processes.
  • Investigate and resolve technical issues during fabrication, assembly, testing, or field use.
  • Participate in root cause analysis and corrective action for nonconformances.
  • Establish and maintain engineering standards and design procedures.
  • Plan and prioritize workloads and project deliverables.
  • Mentor and develop engineering staff in design methods and fabrication-aware practices.

Job description

The Engineering Manager provides technical leadership to engineers and drafters, supports complex design decisions, and works closely with manufacturing, welding, machining, quality, and program management to ensure the successful execution of custom-engineered products.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the engineering team in designing welded and machined mechanical assemblies and structural fabrications.
  • Direct the creation and review of 3D models, fabrication drawings, general arrangement drawings, weldment details, machining drawings, BOMs, and technical documentation.
  • Ensure proper application of GD&T, dimensional tolerances, weld symbols, material specifications, surface finishes, and fit/function requirements.
  • Evaluate structural designs for load paths, rigidity, stress concentrations, distortion control, and manufacturability.
  • Review and approve calculations for structural integrity, weld sizing, fastener selection, bolted joints, deflection, and tolerance stack-up as required.
  • Provide technical guidance on material selection for steel and aluminum applications, considering strength, corrosion resistance, weight, and fabrication characteristics.
  • Collaborate with fabrication and machining teams to address process limitations, weld sequencing, fixturing, machinability, heat effects, and assembly methods.
  • Support design-for-manufacture and design-for-assembly activities to improve quality, reduce cost, and optimize lead time.
  • Manage engineering change control, drawing revisions, and release processes.
  • Investigate and resolve technical issues arising during fabrication, assembly, inspection, testing, or field use.
  • Participate in root cause analysis and corrective action for nonconformances, dimensional discrepancies, and product failures.
  • Establish and maintain engineering standards, drafting practices, and design procedures.
  • Plan and prioritize engineering workloads, project deliverables, and resource allocation.
  • Mentor and develop engineering staff in design methods, standards, and fabrication-aware engineering practices.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical field preferred.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in mechanical design, fabrication, or custom equipment engineering.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in engineering supervision or technical leadership preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of welded steel and aluminum structures, machined components, and mechanical assemblies.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (NX and CATIA) with the ability to interpret and produce detailed engineering drawings.
  • Experience with metric and imperial systems.
  • Solid understanding of GD&T, engineering tolerancing, and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience supporting fabrication methods such as MIG/TIG welding, plate processing, machining, drilling, tapping, and assembly.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and cross-functional communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with custom industrial equipment, aerospace ground support equipment, tooling, or heavy fabrication.
  • Familiarity with finite element analysis, structural validation, or design calculations.
  • Knowledge of weld distortion control, fixturing, and inspection methods.
  • Experience working in ISO-certified or controlled document environments.
  • Familiarity with ERP/PLM systems and engineering change processes.
