Job description

Position Summary

Superior Air Parts is seeking a Mechanical/Aerospace Design Engineer to support the full life cycle of aircraft piston-engine component development-from design and analysis through testing, FAA certification, and production.

Superior Air Parts is a leading FAA Parts Manufacturer Approval (PMA) organization offering more than 2,000 aftermarket replacement parts for Lycoming and Continental aircraft engines. In this role, you will work within FAA regulatory requirements and collaborate with senior engineers, Designated Engineering Representatives (DERs), Manufacturing, Quality, and other cross-functional teams.

This position is ideal for an engineer who enjoys combining technical analysis, 3D CAD modeling, and hands-on work with aircraft engines and precision-manufactured components.

Why Work for Superior Air Parts?

At Superior Air Parts, your work directly supports the general aviation industry. As part of our Engineering team, you will contribute throughout the product-development process-from initial design and finite element analysis to engine testing, FAA certification, and production support.

We offer a collaborative workplace where employees are valued, challenged, and encouraged to grow through continuous learning and support. You will gain hands-on experience with aircraft piston engines while working alongside experienced engineering and manufacturing professionals.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Support the design, development, testing, certification, and production of reciprocating aircraft-engine components.

  • Work with engine components including crankcases, cylinders, crankshafts, and valve trains.

  • Create, evaluate, revise, and maintain 3D CAD models and engineering drawings.

  • Perform finite element analysis (FEA) to evaluate component stresses and support design decisions.

  • Assist with aircraft piston-engine testing and analyze performance data.

  • Prepare and support FAA certification documentation, including engineering reports and test plans.

  • Participate in hands-on engine assembly, teardown, and component inspections.

  • Collaborate with senior engineers, DERs, Manufacturing, Quality, and other departments throughout the product-development process.

  • Provide engineering support for production and manufacturing activities.

  • Assist with additional engineering and operational projects as needed.

  • Follow company policies, procedures, and applicable FAA regulatory requirements.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering.

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.

  • Experience with piston-engine design and operation.

  • Experience creating or working with 3D CAD models and engineering drawings.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

  • Authorization to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with aircraft piston engines, reciprocating engines, or internal-combustion engines.

  • Experience with automotive or aerospace powertrain systems.

  • Experience using Creo Parametric or comparable 3D solid-modeling software.

  • Understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).

  • Experience performing finite element analysis or engineering stress analysis.

  • Experience with MATLAB or LabVIEW.

  • Strong technical writing and engineering-documentation skills.

  • Familiarity with FAA certification, FAA PMA, or other regulated aerospace-manufacturing environments.

  • Demonstrated interest in aviation, aircraft, or piston-engine technology.

Equivalent combinations of relevant education, training, and experience may be considered.
