Job description

Byrne & Jones Construction is one of the largest construction companies in the Midwest. For 50 years, our asphalt, concrete, microsurfacing, soil stabilization, engineering and design, parks, and sports divisions have built the roads, parking lots, parks, and athletic facilities communities utilize every day — and we self-perform the work other builders subcontract. Our Sports division is one of the region’s largest sports builders, with a portfolio of nationally recognized, award-winning athletic facilities. Proven volume, in-house expertise, and control of the work on the ground let us move fast and make the decisions that protect quality and margin early.

We are seeking a Design Build Integrator to manage and lead one of the most vital aspects of each design build project — the design phase, where cost, quality, and risk are determined long before construction begins. You will review plans and specifications before they become contracts, identify cost efficiencies while the design can still change, select and manage our external engineering partners, and hold the buyout gate so no project reaches the field with open scope or unallocated risk. It is a senior, high-visibility seat for a professional who knows where margin is won and lost.

What You Will Own
  • Design coordination. Serve as the single point of integration across internal engineering, external design partners, and the construction side of the business, from pursuit through project closeout.
  • Plan and specification review. Review every milestone for accuracy, cost, constructability, and quality, and drive conflicts to documented resolution.
  • Cost efficiency. Find savings in material and system selection, design alternatives, sequencing, and site and earthwork optimization — and capture them in the buy without compromising quality or safety.
  • Constructability and value engineering. Lead constructability, sequencing, and value-engineering reviews with Estimating, Project Management, and Field Operations, and verify accepted ideas make it into the construction documents.
  • Budget alignment. Verify at each milestone that the developing design still prices to the contracted amount and report variance and corrective action to the Vice President.
  • External design partners. Select architectural, structural, MEP, geotechnical, landscape, and specialty firms; negotiate and administer their agreements and fees.
  • Contract risk. Structure design agreements and design-build subcontracts so exposure sits with the party performing the work.
  • The buyout gate. No project advances to construction without coordinated documents, closed scope, and a validated buy.
  • Permitting and compliance. Keep permitting on schedule and deliverables compliant, working with internal and external engineering partners.
  • Handoff to the field. Deliver a documented design-to-construction handoff, then serve as the design point of contact for changes, submittals, and AHJ issues through closeout.
What You Bring
  • Experience. Ten or more years across design and construction, including responsibility for coordinating design disciplines on design-build or alternative delivery projects, paired with real field experience.
  • Project management. Large-scale construction projects, generally $5 million or greater.
  • Partner management. A track record with external engineering consultants — selection, scoping, fees, and deliverables.
  • Technical depth. The ability to read, interpret, and cost civil, structural, and specialty construction documents, and to spot the scope gap before it becomes a contract.
  • Education. A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Engineering Management, or a related field, or equivalent experience. PE license and DBIA certification preferred.
  • A plus. Sports facility, specialty surfacing, or site and earthwork design-build background.
What We Offer
  • Base salary. $120,000 to $180,000, based on experience.
  • Profit sharing. Additional earning potential tied to company and individual performance.
  • Health coverage. Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Retirement. 401(k) with company match.
  • Time off. Paid time off and paid holidays.
  • Professional development. Training and support for continuing education and certification.
  • Stability. A privately owned company that has grown across the Midwest for 50 years.
  • Core values, lived. Be an expert. Do the right thing. Preserve reputation. Do whatever it takes. Have mutual trust and respect.
  • Real authority. Direct access to division leadership and high-profile projects that impact communities.
