Job summary

The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking a Design & Planning Engineer to oversee highway safety, day labor contracts, crack sealing, bridge work, storm sewer maintenance and related projects. You will provide technical advice to various bureaus, officials, contractors, and consultants, helping shape district improvements and safety programs.

This role requires a PE or Structural Engineer license in Illinois and at least five years of civil engineering experience.

Qualifications

• Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in Illinois or current registration as a Licensed Structural Engineer in Illinois.
• Five years of experience in civil engineering.

Responsibilities

• Develops and monitors annual contract maintenance, crack sealing, bridge repair, bridge painting, storm sewer maintenance, emergency repair, day labor contracts, rest area/weigh scale, and signal and safety improvement programs in a timely and cost-effective manner.
• Provides technical advice to departmental personnel, local agency personnel, contractors and consultants in design, construction and maintenance of electrical devices and safety-related highway features.
• Reviews and approves overweight/height/width and parade permits; responds to inquiries from local officials, civic groups, and the public.
• Ensures accuracy and timely completion of plans, studies and reports.
• Fills in as acting Maintenance Field Engineer until vacancy is filled.
• Provides training, motivation and evaluation of staff to operate an efficient section.

Position Overview

This position is responsible for determining the nature and scope of highway safety, day labor, contractmaintenance, crack sealing, bridge painting, storm sewer maintenance, bridge repair, emergency repair,electrical and traffic control related projects, and providing technical advice and assistance on those matters toother bureaus in the district, various local officials, and the public.

• Provides technical advice to various departmental personnel, local agency personnel, contractors, andconsultants in the design, construction, and maintenance of electrical devices and safety-relatedhighway features using state of the art engineering practices.
• Reviews and approves overweight/height/width and parade permits. Answers complaints and inquiriesfrom local officials, civic groups, and the public.
• Ensures the accuracy and timely completion of plans, studies, and reports.
• Fills in as acting Maintenance Field Engineer until the vacancy is filled.
• Provides effective training, motivation, and evaluation of subordinate personnel to operate an efficientsection.

Minimum Qualifications

• Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois OR currentregistration as a Licensed Structural Engineer in the state of Illinois.

Preferred Qualifications

• Ability to direct the work of other engineers and technicians, mechanics, equipment operators, andlaborers.
• Experience in construction and project management.
• Strong oral and written communication skills
