Job summary

Rock County is seeking a sworn deputy to perform law enforcement duties as designated by the Sheriff, including detention, court services, patrol, and related activities. This is a lateral transfer; current or former sworn officers will be considered.

Selected candidates will be contacted for deputy testing on October 1st (8:30am) or October 5th (12:30pm). The deputy must maintain readiness, enforce laws, and serve the public with professionalism within Rock County.

Qualifications

• Sworn officer status required or preferred.
• Minimum 60 college credits; Bachelors preferred.
• Wisconsin Law Enforcement Certification preferred.
• Ability to pass written examination, background check, and medical/psychological exams.
• Must meet physical and driving requirements.

Responsibilities

• Enforce state laws and county ordinances.
• Respond to citizen requests for assistance.
• Arrest criminal code violators.
• Guard, transport and care for inmates.
• Serve legal papers and transport to facilities.
• Investigate vehicle crashes and conduct criminal investigations.
• Write reports and maintain files using computer reporting systems.

Job description

This is a lateral transfer position.

Candidates interested in applying must be current or former sworn officers.

Candidates selected to move forward will be contacted to complete deputy testing on either of these dates:
Thursday, October 1st with an 8:30am check-in time
Monday, October 5th with a 12:30pm check-in time

Performs the duties of a sworn law enforcement officer as designated by the command staff under the direction of the elected Sheriff.
This is responsible work enforcing laws and ordinances, providing detention and courtroom services, patrol and guard duty and related supportive law enforcement activities in the Sheriff's Office. Work involves prevention, detection and investigation of accident and criminal activities, security and safety of inmates/prisoners, protection for the public and maintaining law and order. Deputies must be able to act without direct supervision in emergency situations.

30%Perform Law Enforcement activities within Rock County

• Enforce state laws and County ordinances
• Respond to citizen requests for assistance

• Transport inmates and juveniles to and from correctional facilities and court
• Search prisoners for weapons and contraband
• Provide security to courthouse and courtrooms

• Intervene in domestic and mental health disturbances
• Educate the public on crime prevention techniques
• Operate Doppler radar unit in vehicle speed enforcement

30% Maintain Public Safety with the County

• Monitor vehicle traffic on highways and roads
• Investigate vehicle crashes
• Conduct Child Passenger Safety checks and provide training
• Conduct criminal investigations
• Testify in court

30% Process paperwork

• Write reports, citations, document and maintain files, including using computers for reporting and retrieval
• Execute writs, including evictions, repossessions, collection of money and lands
• Assist with foreclosure sales, including posting notices, auctions and post sale papers
• Acquire, execute and return warrants and search warrants
• Collect and process evidence

• Must be a current or former sworn officer (this is a lateral transfer recruitment)
• The minimum requirement will be 60 college credits with preference given to candidates that have a Bachelors Degree and State of Wisconsin Law Enforcement Certification.
• Eligibility for Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board certification preferred, but not required.
• Visual acuity correctable to 20/20 with glasses or contacts.
• Valid driver's license with a good driving record.
• Passing score on written examination.
• Pass background investigation, psychological exam, and medical exam that includes a cardiovascular fitness test, drug screening, and psychological evaluation.
• Must not have been convicted of any federal felony or offense punishable in Wisconsin as a felony unless granted absolute and unconditional pardon.
• Required to obtain certification from Wisconsin State Law Enforcement Standards Board Training and legally be able to carry a firearm (employer may provide certification opportunity).
• Attend 24 hours of in-service training to maintain law enforcement certification.
