Job summary

Durham County Government is seeking BLET-certified Deputy Sheriffs to join the Office of the Sheriff. This full-time role patrols, responds to calls, serves warrants, testifies in court and supports investigations to keep Durham County safe.

Applicants must hold NC BLET certification, have or obtain a NC driver’s license, and have no felony convictions. The position requires 12-hour rotating shifts including holidays and weekends, with pay from $55,500 to $92,151 plus incentives.

Qualifications

• Current NC Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) certification.
• Must have or be able to obtain a North Carolina driver’s license.
• Must not have been convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor.

Responsibilities

• Operate a patrol car and observe violations or disturbances of law and order.
• Respond to radio dispatches, calls, and complaints.
• Serve warrants, subpoenas, court orders, and make arrests; testify in court.
• Assist in investigations and domestic disputes; direct traffic for events.
• Prepare detailed reports and manage evidence; transport prisoners when required.

The Durham County Sheriff’s Office is seeking BLET certified Deputy Sheriffs who embody the values and diversity of the Durham County community.

Typical Responsibilities

• On an assigned shift, operates a patrol car to observe violations of laws, suspicious activities or persons and disturbances of law and order.
• Responds to radio dispatches and answers calls and complaints.
• Serves warrants, summons, subpoenas, capiases, court orders, notices, attachments, claims and deliveries, ejections, executions, and other legal papers, makes arrests.
• Testifies in court.
• Assists in domestic disputes.
• Directs traffic for funerals and other public gatherings.
• Assists other law enforcement officers in investigations.
• Serves as court bailiff and prisoner guard.
• Reports unsafe conditions existing in the street or other public facilities.
• Assists with criminal investigations by presenting evidence, interviewing victims and witnesses, prepares property and evidence, recording and issuing of evidence in court cases.
• Transport prisoners, mental patients and others as required.
• Performs Bailiff and court security duties as assigned.
• Prepares detailed reports.
• Performs related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

• General knowledge of police methods, practices, and procedures.
• General knowledge of the geography of the County and location of important buildings
• Thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Sheriff’s Department.
• Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear comprehensive reports.
• Ability to deal courteously but firmly with the public.
• Ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances.
• Ability to develop skills in the use of firearms and the operation of motor vehicles.
• Ability to maintain physical agility and endurance.

Requirements
