The Richmond City Sheriff's Office in Richmond, VA is actively recruiting candidates for Deputy Sheriff roles, jail deputy positions, and related public safety postings, including corrections and civilian support roles. This non-patrol pathway offers advancement to Jail Operations, Court Security, and Civil Process assignments and requires successful completion of a physical agility test.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 21 years old
• Must be a U.S. citizen
• High school diploma or GED required
• Never convicted of any felony charge
• Never convicted of any domestic violence offense
• No serious misdemeanors
• Must possess strong moral character as determined by the Applicant Screening Panel and background investigation
• Must be willing to submit to fingerprinting and a background check
• Must be free from physical, emotional, or mental conditions that might affect ability to exercise deputy powers
• Must possess/obtain Virginia driver’s license within 30 days of employment
• Must submit to extensive background investigation, credit history check, polygraph, medical examination/drug screening
• Must complete DCJS requirements for certification within one year of hire
• Must have basic computer skills and be familiar with Microsoft Office
• Must qualify with firearms and other defensive weapons

Responsibilities

• Maintains security of residents within an assigned post
• Monitors residents and performs security inspections
• Documents situations not consistent with routine operations
• Assists deputies and follows use-of-force policies
• Supervises resident movement and activities
• Transports residents to locations outside the Justice Center
• Performs resident searches as needed
• Provides security during meals and visitation
• Maintains key control and security records
• Ensures security of facility access and perimeter
• Communicates via two-way radio using SOP terminology
• Performs duties during resident visitation and public assistance
• Adheres to safety and security procedures
