Job description

Deputy Sheriff II (Class 8604)

Deputy Sheriff II – Under general supervision, supervise inmates in a county correctional institution; patrol an area and enforce law and order; receive and serve civil process; maintain order in courts; assist with special investigations; investigate circumstances surrounding death referred to the coroner; coordinate emergency services programs and volunteer activities; and perform related duties as required.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise inmate work and conduct in correctional facilities.
  • Patrol designated areas and enforce law and public order.
  • Receive and serve civil process documents.
  • Maintain court order and security during proceedings.
  • Assist in special investigations and incident responses.
  • Investigate deaths referred to the coroner.
  • Coordinate emergency services and volunteer activities.
  • Perform duties as assigned and as required.
Minimum Qualifications

Experience:

  • Equivalent to 18 months as a Deputy Sheriff I in Alameda County service and possession of a California Post Basic certificate; or
  • Minimum 36 months full‑time experience as a peace officer in a California agency with a separation date within 36 months of application and a Post Basic certificate; or
  • Minimum 36 months full‑time experience as a peace officer outside California with a valid Basic Course Waiver issued by California Post.

License: Valid California State Motor Vehicle Operator’s license by date of appointment.

Age: At least 21 years at appointment.

Citizenship: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States; U.S. citizenship not required.

Special Requirements: Commercial driver’s license for certain duties and pre‑placement drug and alcohol testing as required.

Physical Requirements: Normal hearing; vision of 20/100 without glasses (correctable to 20/20); no color blindness; excellent physical condition with above‑average strength, endurance, and agility; meet California Post approved physical standards.

Examination Components
  • Application review to verify minimum requirements.

  • Background investigation and psychological examination; felony convictions result in disqualification.
  • Candidates must attain a qualifying rating on all portions.
