Job summary

The Wall Street Journal in Washington, DC is seeking an experienced Deputy National Security Editor to help lead coverage of U.S. foreign policy, defense, and global geopolitics. You will shape high-impact stories and edit ambitious features for a sophisticated audience.

Reporting to the National Security Editor, you will oversee daily reporting, elevate stories, and mentor a seasoned team of reporters. This is a full-time, on-site role with a competitive base pay range.

Qualifications

  • Elite editing skills with ability to turn complex geopolitics into clear prose.
  • Strong understanding of the Journal’s audience and multi-platform storytelling.
  • Deep knowledge of U.S. geopolitics, Defense and State departments, and intelligence community.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment under deadline pressure.
  • Minimum of 4 years of high-level journalism experience in national security or foreign policy.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily coverage of the national security beat, including Pentagon, State Department, and intelligence community.
  • Collaborate with reporters to sharpen storytelling and develop must-read stories.
  • Mentor and coach a team of reporters on narrative structure and investigations.
  • Coordinate with senior editors to set coverage priorities and ensure a seamless global narrative.
  • Champion new storytelling formats and digital-publishing tools to engage a global audience.
