Job summary

Dakota County is seeking an Assistant Criminal Division Head to oversee the Criminal Division’s day-to-day operations, supervise attorneys, paralegals, and staff, and provide direction to support personnel in prosecutions for the State of Minnesota.

The role reports to the Criminal Division Head, participates in policy development, and drives excellence in public service while ensuring adherence to legal standards and County procedures.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.
• Licensed to practice law in Minnesota by the date of hire.
• Five years of full-time criminal trial and/or criminal appellate experience as a licensed attorney.

Responsibilities

• Directly supervise attorneys, paralegals, and law clerks with assignment oversight and staff coordination.
• Provide legal advice to the Criminal Division Head and County Attorney on criminal matters.
• Prepare legal documents and represent the County/State in court.
• Monitor performance and conduct reviews of subordinates.
• Advise on management, policy, and case handling within the division.
• Ensure proper record keeping and documentation of decisions.
