Job summary

The City of Kodiak seeks a full-time Deputy Harbormaster (Deputy Director) to lead the Port and Harbors Department, overseeing St. Paul Harbor, St. Herman Harbor, the Kodiak Shipyard, and associated piers and facilities.

Responsibilities include directing daily harbor operations, budgeting, safety, and coordinating with USCG and cruise lines; the ideal candidate has strong supervisory and maritime management experience. This role may act as Harbormaster when needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with public administration/business focus.
  • 5–7 years harbor experience with supervisory duties.
  • Experience coordinating with USCG, port authorities, and cruise lines.
  • License: valid Alaska driver’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days; TWIC or ability to obtain within 30 days.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and supervises assigned staffing and daily operational activities of the port and harbors department.
  • Supervises, inspects and oversees personnel including performance evaluations and training; hiring/disciplinary actions as needed.
  • Serves as Assistant Facility Safety Officer and coordinates Port Security with USCG and local agencies.
  • Responds to emergencies and coordinates port operations with cruise lines and regulatory plans.
  • Assists Harbormaster in budgeting and capital planning; monitors expenditures and ensures compliance.
