The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.
The Site Connection Unit is a unit within the Division of Engineering, Connection and Permitting that reviews engineering applications related to site connection and house connection proposals to ensure storm and sanitary discharge to the city sewers follows the latest rules and regulations and determines the potential impact on the New York City DEP and sewer systems. This unit ensures that all reviews/approvals conform to DEP rules, regulations and requirements and will not have adverse impacts on the city’s sewer and drainage system, conducting all reviews in accordance with established schedules. The Engineer in Charge of the Site Connection Unit is responsible for supervising 8-10 staff of varying expertise including mechanical and civil engineers as well as engineering technicians. Specific responsibilities of Deputy EIC include, but are not limited to:
(1) Four (4) years of full-time, satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; and (2) A valid New York State Professional Engineer’s License. Current New York State registration as a Professional Engineer must be maintained for the duration of your employment.
A master’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university may be substituted for one year of the civil engineering experience required above.
Special Note: To be eligible for placement in Assignment Levels II and III, individuals must have at least one year within the last three years of experience as a major contributor or a project leader on a complex project requiring additional and specific expertise in the disciplines needed to design or construct the project.
- A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an ABET accredited university.
- Candidates must have six (6) years of full-time paid experience in civil engineering work.
- Experience using Microsoft Office, ARCGIS, and understanding of databases.
- Ability to handle multiple priorities and projects simultaneously.
- Excellent communication skills both written and oral.
- A valid New York State License as a Professional Engineer is required.
- Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York is required.
- Experience using advanced functions of GIS and Microsoft Office, specifically advanced level of expertise in Excel.
- Willingness to interact with other units, divisions, and bureaus within DEP as well as other governmental agencies and private applicants in a professional and timely manner.
- Ability to learn quickly a new scope of review to adapt to a wide variety of projects.
- Highly professional ability at electronic and telephone communication.
- High competency with technical writing.
- Ability to work with moderate supervision.
- Willingness to improve existing systems and processes where the existing structure may be deficient.
