Job summary

The Town of Dennis is seeking a Deputy Director of Public Works to oversee highway/grounds, cemetery, solid waste, fleet maintenance, engineering, municipal buildings and administration. The role requires strong leadership, adaptability and the ability to manage staff and outside contractors in a fast-paced environment.

The Deputy Director provides leadership, supports budgeting, safety compliance, and represents the Town on boards and with state and federal agencies.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and five to seven years prior work experience with at least three years in a supervisory capacity.
  • Equivalent combination of education, training and experience acceptable.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize and coordinate department activities that include the collection and disposal of refuse, storm water drainage maintenance, street construction and maintenance, landscape and fleet maintenance and repair work.
  • Assist in the preparation and execution of the operating and capital budget for the Department of Public Works.
  • Assist Director in the overall direction to operational and administrative functions of the department in accordance with Town goals and policies.
  • Supervise the repair and maintenance of all Town-owned properties and structures including roads, parks, buildings, cemeteries and beaches.
  • Ensure proper use, maintenance and security of municipal vehicles, machinery and equipment.
  • Maintain knowledge of relevant local, state and federal laws and regulations and ensure funding, compliance and implementation.
  • Coordinate procurement of department equipment, vehicles, materials and supplies per State Procurement Law.
  • Assist with recruitment, selection and training of all department employees.
  • Respond to citizen information requests and complaints.
  • Represent the Town on boards, task forces, or committees.
  • Conduct research and provide input on short and long-term plans, including material cost and labor requirements.
  • Coordinate interdepartmental needs and ensure cooperation with other Town departments and agencies.
  • May serve on the Town’s collective bargaining team.
  • Conduct employee evaluations and provide guidance on actions.
  • Consult with Division heads and foremen on special projects.
  • Stay current on OSHA safety regulations and ensure safety procedures are followed.

The Town of Dennis is seeking qualified applicants to fill a multi-faceted and fulfilling role in the field of Municipal Public Works, as the Deputy Director of Public Works. Dennis Public Works is a fast paced, service driven Department with ever-changing, multiple priorities and demands. We seek a Deputy Director who has the energy, flexibility, and foresight to excel in a hectic environment while adapting to change. The successful candidate effectively assists in managing a diverse staff and outside contractors, maintains positive public relations and communicates with tact and diplomacy with constituents, elected officials, businesses and state and federal agencies. The right candidate is not afraid to wear many hats. This position is responsible for assisting the Director of Public Works in the administrative and supervisory duties pertaining to highway/grounds, cemetery, solid waste and recycling, fleet maintenance, engineering, municipal buildings, and administration. The Deputy Director provides technical support involved in the planning, directing, organizing, leadership and administration of the Public Works Department, its initiatives, and mission.

  • Assists the Director in the preparation and execution of the operating and capital budget for the Department of Public Works.
  • Assists Director in the overall direction to operational and administrative functions of the department in accordance with the Town goals and objectives, established policies and procedures.
  • Supervises the repair and maintenance of all Town-owned properties and structures including roads, park and recreation areas, solid waste and recycling facilities, buildings, cemeteries and beaches.
  • Assures proper use, maintenance and security of municipal vehicles, machinery and equipment.
  • Maintains knowledge of relevant local, state and federal laws and regulations of agencies relevant to public works functions, establishing the systems and rapport required for timely information, continued and potential funding, legal compliance and effective implementation.
  • Implements the procurement of department equipment, vehicles, materials and supplies in accordance with the State Procurement Law.
  • Assists with the recruitment, selection and training of all department employees.
  • Responds to requests for information and/or complaints from citizens.
  • Represents the Town on various local, regional and state boards, task forces, or committees.
  • Conducts research and provides input as necessary regarding short and long-term plans and projects including determining the cost of materials, equipment and labor force required.
  • Coordinates interdepartmental public work’s needs, providing departments and divisional expertise and assuring cooperation and communication both internally and with other Town departments, regional and state agencies.
  • May serve as a member of the Town’s collective bargaining team.
  • Conducts employee evaluations and makes recommendations on departmental employee actions.
  • Consults regularly with Division heads and foreman and provides advice on special projects as necessary.
  • Keeps current on OSHA safety regulations, to ensure safety procedures and practices are followed.

The minimum qualifications for the position include a Bachelor’s degree and five to seven years prior work experience with at least three years in a supervisory capacity; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.

Final candidate must successfully pass the pre-employment process which includes a thorough background investigation of employment, education history and criminal history.

Salary and benefits are commensurate with experience.
