The LA County Board of Supervisors has ratified a Proclamation of Local Emergency due to recent windstorms and wildfires, including the Palisades and Eaton Fires. We seek qualified individuals to help mobilize resources for community recovery. This is an opportunity to make a direct impact on LA County residents.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office (LADA) is hiring attorneys for emergency Deputy District Attorney I positions related to this disaster. Appointments may initially last up to 90 days, with potential for permanent employment. During this period, performance will be evaluated, and successful candidates may be considered for permanent roles.

DEFINITION

Performs beginning level legal work in criminal prosecution for the District Attorney's Office.

CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS

Positions involve less complex legal tasks in criminal prosecution. Incumbents should have knowledge of California criminal law, procedure, and Evidence Code. They will rotate through developmental assignments, try cases before courts and juries, and receive close supervision.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
  • Researches and prepares cases for prosecution.
  • Prepares and presents preliminary hearings and misdemeanor trials.
  • Acts as a courtroom advocate.
  • Confers with victims, witnesses, law enforcement, and defense attorneys.
  • Visits crime scenes when appropriate.
  • Discusses trial tactics and legal issues with supervising attorneys.
  • Prepares legal documents such as briefs, pleadings, and complaints.
  • Conducts legal research and writes relevant legal documents.
  • Obtains evidence of prior convictions and provides discovery.
  • Negotiates with defense attorneys regarding charges.
  • Assists in more complex criminal cases as needed.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must be admitted to the California State Bar. Acceptable documentation includes:

  • A current California State Bar Card (indicate 2025).
  • If recently passed the bar, a letter from the State Bar confirming passing status and eligibility for practice.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Valid California Class C Driver License or alternative transportation.
  • Physical ability to perform light physical effort.
BACKGROUND CHECK

All candidates will undergo a background check, including Live Scan. Disqualifying factors include criminal convictions, poor credit, substance abuse, and certain traffic violations.

EXAMINATION CONTENT

Performance during the initial work period will be evaluated; passing this assessment may lead to permanent appointment.
