The LA County Board of Supervisors has ratified a Proclamation of Local Emergency due to recent windstorms and wildfires, including the Palisades and Eaton Fires, impacting communities across the County. We seek qualified individuals to help mobilize resources for recovery and rebuilding. This is an opportunity to make a direct impact on LA County residents.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office (LADA) is hiring attorneys for emergency Deputy District Attorney I roles related to this disaster.

Under the emergency order, eligible applicants may be hired for up to 90 days initially, with a possibility for permanent employment. Performance during this period will be evaluated, and successful candidates may be considered for permanent appointment.

DEFINITION:
Performs basic legal work in prosecuting criminal cases for the District Attorney's Office.

CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS:
Positions involve less complex criminal prosecution tasks. Incumbents need knowledge of criminal law, procedure, and Evidence Code in California. They will learn office policies and handle a variety of developmental assignments, including trying cases before courts and juries under close supervision.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
  • Researches and prepares cases for prosecution.
  • Prepares and presents preliminary hearings and misdemeanor trials.
  • Acts as courtroom advocate, confers with victims, witnesses, law enforcement, and defense attorneys.
  • Visits crime scenes when appropriate.
  • Discusses trial strategies and legal issues with supervisors.
  • Prepares legal documents such as briefs and complaints.
  • Conducts legal research and writes relevant legal documents.
  • Obtains evidence of prior convictions and manages discovery.
  • Negotiates dispositions with defense attorneys.
  • Assists in prosecuting more complex cases as needed.

Applicants must be admitted to the California State Bar. Acceptable documentation includes:

  • A current California State Bar Card (indicate 2025).
  • If recently passed the bar, a letter from the Bar confirming passing score and eligibility for admission.

No withholds are permitted; all experience must be fully met by the application deadline.


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Valid California Class C Driver License or alternative transportation; physical ability for light effort; background check including Live Scan; no disqualifying criminal or traffic history.
