Duties & Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Chief Nursing Officer, participates in planning, organizing, coordinating and evaluating all clinical programs to ensure implementation of the mission, philosophy, patient care standards, quality assessment and improvement program, budget plan and resources to enhance the quality of patient care. Assumes responsibility for facilitating the overall strategic plan for departmental operations, personnel management, annual goals and objectives, and fiscal targets.

Summary Of Duties And Responsibilities
  • Performs all duties of Chief Nursing Officer in his/her absence.
  • Oversees the development, revision and implementation of department policies and procedures to support outcomes based care and best practices.
  • Evaluates the impact of changes in clinical practice and support innovation to improve care delivery and resources in the environment of practice.
  • Leads and participate in clinical redesign and improvement teams to facilitate advancing clinical practice of patient care and assure adequate resources for clinical and non clinical support of patient care.
  • Directs and evaluates the efficacy, effectiveness, and efficiency of the performance of all personnel in carry out the mission of the hospital.
  • Responsible for working with the CNO to provide prudent fiscal management of the operational budget. Assist in evaluating the departmental budget and meeting financial targets.
  • Monitors, evaluates and readjusts financial and strategic plans, as indicated to meet the changing needs of the patient population.
  • Disseminates and interprets information with ADNs, as indicated.
  • Participates with Nursing/Hospital departmental leaders and integrates decision-making structures and processes.
  • Supports the clinical leadership in the development of interdisciplinary and nursing standards relevant to the scope of nursing practice.
  • Represents the Department of Nursing on hospital committees and teams.
  • Ensures that personnel issues are managed in compliance with contractual agreements and supports positive employee-management relationships.
  • Collaborates with ADNs to insure adequate staffing plans.
  • Revaluates periodically staffing and competency requirements based on the changing needs of the patient population.
  • Participates in nursing professional organizations and supports same in clinical nursing leadership.
  • Maintains awareness of current trends and legislation affecting the nursing profession and healthcare delivery.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State; and,
  • A Master's Degree in Nursing Administration or an equivalent field from an accredited college or university, and a minimum of four years of high-level responsible experience in nursing administration, three years of which shall have been in a hospital; or,
  • A satisfactory equivalent combination of education, experience and training. However, all candidates must be licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State.
