Job summary

The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences in Houston, TX seeks a Deputy Chief Medical Examiner to oversee pathology, morgue, histology, anthropology, imaging and investigations. You will ensure compliance with accreditation standards and quality assurance in medicolegal death investigations.

You will provide courtroom testimony, train fellows and residents, manage budgets and staff, and lead coordination with law enforcement and attorneys for timely, accurate autopsy reports.

Qualifications

• Ten years’ experience in forensic pathology and death investigation, including five years supervising others.
• Licensed to practice medicine in Texas by the date of employment; board certification in anatomic and forensic pathology.
• Completion of an ACGME-accredited residency and forensic pathology fellowship.

Responsibilities

• Conduct medicolegal death investigations under Tex. Crim. Proc. 49.25, including autopsies and external examinations, with evidence collection.
• Develop QA activities to ensure accreditation and review autopsy reports; manage peer reviews.
• Coordinate budget, hiring, training, performance feedback, and mentorship; supervise staff.
• Directly supervise all Pathology Division staff and multiple division directors.
• Monitor case management and on-call duties; handle jurisdictional matters.
• Provide expert testimony in criminal and civil court; prepare for depositions and pretrial conferences.
• Engage in teaching; supervise residents and students and deliver lectures.
