Alaska Commercial Company is seeking a Department Manager, General Merchandise in Nome, AK. This full-time role offers relocation and housing benefits with a competitive hourly wage of $22.00–$27.00+ per hour DOE.

You will lead a team, drive sales, manage merchandising, and ensure stock availability in a remote Alaska setting. The position requires strong customer service, 3+ years of retail management, and comfort with Excel/Outlook.

Qualifications

  • Record of bottom line and sales results in previous roles.
  • 3+ years of management experience in general merchandise retail.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions, both verbally and written.
  • Computer knowledge of Excel and Outlook.
  • Strong knowledge of general merchandise operating principles.
  • Keen attention to detail and customer driven.

Responsibilities

  • Present product to achieve maximum sales/profits and follow correct stock rotation.
  • Ensure General Merchandise department is ready for business according to the needs of its target customers and departmental readiness is maintained throughout the day, including the availability of “always in stock” items.
  • Consistently meet the daily operating disciplines.
  • Responsible for financial targets, merchandising and promotions, operational controls, customer relations, and inventory management.
  • Plan and execute seasonal and promotional merchandising to achieve maximum sales, profits, and customer excitement.
  • Ensure efficiency and growth of the General Merchandise Department through pro-active planning.
  • Participate in advertising campaigns and strategies.
  • Price all merchandise in accordance with marketing guidelines.
  • Ensure product quality through correct ordering, receiving, handling, and rotation.
  • Monitor gross profit and investigate and address variances.

Your Responsibilities:

This is a training position.General Merchandise Department Managers-in-Training play an important role in the day-to-day operations within the Department, which also provides valuable service to the community and its people.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Must work in extreme conditions in remote parts of Alaska, depending on time of year
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs. regularly
  • Ability to work extended hours
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time on a daily basis
  • Ability to handle or feel and reach with hands and arms
  • Ability to train in any one of our training locations, depending on the need, with the understanding that once you are done in this training location, you will be relocated to another location, based onoperational needs

Reports to: General Merchandise Manager

Housing Guidelines:

Company-provided housing is intended for employees and their immediate family members only, defined as a spouse or partner and dependent children. Most housing units have an occupancy limit of four individuals. Exceptions will be reviewed and must be approved in advance by the Director of Operations.

Pet Policy:

Due to the remote nature of our locations, limited housing options, and restricted access to veterinary care, pets are generally discouraged. Pet requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis and must be approved by the Director of Operations. In communities where pets are permitted, there is a firm limit of two pets per unit—no exceptions. Service animals are permitted in accordance with applicable laws.
