Job summary

Woodgrain in Fruitland, ID is seeking a Department Lead for 2nd shift. The role is hands-on, leading a production team on the floor, operating equipment, and coordinating work with the leadership team.

You will monitor quality, mentor operators, and ensure safety while supporting daily production goals. Overtime and Saturday hours may be required; starting pay is $21.00 per hour with a $1 shift differential.

Job Title: Department Lead - 2nd Shift

Job Location: Fruitland, ID

Starting Salary: $21.00($20.00 + $1.00 shift differential)

Employment Type: Hourly Full-Time

Work Environment: Monday – Friday from 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm with overtime including extended hours and Saturday as needed.

Job Summary

The Department Lead role is intended for an employee who demonstrates strong technical expertise, leadership potential, and a commitment to driving success while remaining actively engaged on the production floor. The Department Lead is a hands‑on role where the lead will spend a majority of their work schedule operating equipment. They will also serve as a partner to the leadership team by helping coordinate work, facilitating communication, and bringing awareness to obstacles that may be impacting the team. In addition, they will act as a resource for employees in the Frameline and Lamination departments though employee development, setting expectations for the team, and ensuring a safe work environment.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Provide leadership, direction, coaching, and training to team members while promoting a positive and productive work environment.
• Serve as the primary communication link between production employees and others in leadership, escalating safety, quality, equipment, and employee relations concerns as needed.
• Safely set up, operate, troubleshoot, and perform basic maintenance on the equipment to meet production, quality, and efficiency standards.
• Monitor product quality through inspections and measurements, ensuring all components meet specifications and customer requirements.
• Coordinate workflow, material flow, and staffing priorities to support daily production goals.
• Crosstrain employees and maintain proficiency in multiple positions to provide operational support and coverage when needed.
• Assist with employee training, skill development, and performance feedback to improve team capabilities.
• Serve as the backup to the Production Supervisor by helping coordinate shift operations, addressing day‑to‑day issues, and maintaining continuity of operations during the supervisor's absence.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.

• Strong mechanical and troubleshooting abilities.
• Strong communication skills including the ability to coach others and elevate concerns to leadership.
• Previous experience in a manufacturing environment preferred.

Physical Demands

The physical demands and work environment are representative of a typical sawmill environment. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. Noise level is moderate to high depending on the area of the mill. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is often required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk and hear. Requires close vision, distance vision, and depth perception. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 30 pounds.
