Macalester College seeks an experienced administrative professional to support the Sociology Department, including budgeting, document management, and staff supervision. Responsibilities

  • Provide clerical and administrative support to department faculty members and assist the chair with administrative tasks and procedures by building knowledge of relevant policies, procedures, and resources.
  • Organize and maintain department documents and databases, while assisting students with accessibility efforts.
  • Maintain departmental website.
  • Hire, train, supervise, and mentor student employees, helping to make the employment a contribution to the students’ learning and growth.
  • Organise and coordinate department events (e.g., capstone lunches, holiday parties, senior dinners, alumni panels, occasional conferences/guest speakers) and similar events for concentrations directed by department faculty members.
  • Serve as administrative liaison and point of contact for the department; provide oral and written information about department and course offerings to students and others on and off campus.
  • Oversee and monitor department budget and make general department purchases.
  • Completes other responsibilities as assigned.
  • Participates as an active member of the team.
  • Participates in department and college activities and supports implementation of shared goals and initiatives.
  • Provides backup support to other team members.

Overview

Enhances the atmosphere and productivity of the Sociology Department through a variety of day-to-day and scheduled tasks throughout the academic year. Responsible for hiring and supervising student employees, managing the department’s budget, developing and maintaining resources for the department, including accessibility, working with faculty on a range of departmental initiatives, and supporting interdepartmental concentrations when a departmental faculty member serves as a director of those concentrations. Balances established routines and programming with creative, fresh perspectives on work tasks, manages multiple priorities, communicates clearly, and helps foster an environment of learning in the department. A campus-wide network of academic staff with similar responsibilities collaborates to offer professional advice and mentoring.

About the Department

The Sociology Department is a collaborative and collegial environment. We have four faculty tenure lines in the department and an office suite in Carnegie (which also includes offices for a few faculty members outside the department). We emphasize student research in our curriculum, which structures many of our annual activities. We prioritize making the department a welcoming home to a wide range of students, while supporting these students in their academic and professional development.

$23.19-$24.25 Hourly
