Job description

The Durham Health Care System is currently looking to hire one (1) part-time General Staff Dentist who will perform a full range of professional dental procedures in connection with the treatment of commonly encountered dental diseases or dental health problems requiring standard corrective, restorative, or preventive measures.

Job Description/Scope of Practice:

The General Practice Staff Dentist services as a practicing dentist who performs a full range of professional dental procedures related to the treatment of common dental diseases and health problems requiring corrective, restorative, or preventive measures.

The General Dentistry Staff Dentist should be proficient in all aspects of general dentistry, including the ability to perform selected specialty services. Specifically, the provider should possess the expertise and competency to perform the following:

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Dentist Basic Requirements:

  • A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or Dental Medicine from an accredited school. The degree must be obtained from a school approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course was completed. Approved schools include (1) U.S. and Canadian schools listed by CODA, or (2) foreign schools accepted by the licensing body of a U.S. state or territory, with licensure including written and clinical exams. Applicants claiming certification must provide an ECFMG certificate if applicable.
  • Completion or current enrollment in a residency program in general practice or specialty, or equivalent experience treating medically compromised patients.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia. Dentists must maintain current licensure registration as required.

Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear speech, and manual dexterity. The incumbent will be involved in walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. Exposure to infected patients and contaminated materials is possible, necessitating protective clothing in isolation situations. Occasionally, the incumbent may encounter patients with delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The ability to work effectively under stress, adapt to changing priorities, and demonstrate flexibility is essential.
