Duties Description

The New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) is looking for a Dentist 2 to provide professional dental care for Individuals with intellectual / developmental disabilities (ID/DD) receiving services throughout NYS. The Dentist 2 will perform a full range of dental duties in connection with the treatment of dental diseases or dental health problems requiring corrective restorative or preventive measures and will be involved in dental health cases with Individuals who experience challenging behaviors and/or may have communication challenges. The ideal candidate will have the ability to administer anesthesia.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct examinations utilizing x-rays, mouth mirrors and other diagnostic procedures and instruments to determine pathological or irregular conditions.
  • Treat dental diseases, injuries and malfunctions of teeth and gums, perform restoration of simple and compound cavities, administer anesthesia,

perform oral surgery commensurate with professional qualifications, extractions of teeth and teeth cleaning by scaling calculus.

  • Advise Individual's about dental health practices.
  • Ensure proper documentation of all monitoring, sedation and dental care is provided within the Individual's electronic dental record.
  • Prescribe and/or administer dental sedation. Perform dental care under sedation in OPWDD dental clinics with monitoring done by BLS certified RN

or administer dental sedation and provide monitoring while the dental work is completed by another licensed, BLS certified dentist.

  • Evaluate Individual's medical history and current health status to assess for potential risks associated with sedation.
  • Determine level of sedation and appropriate setting needed for dental procedure.
  • Assist in providing information regarding sedation, potential side effects and procedures for consent purposes.
  • Ensure consent has been obtained prior to procedures.
  • Recommend and review preoperative medical assessment from Primary Care Provider.
  • Ensure post-procedure monitoring, pain management strategies and discharge is done according to guidelines.
  • Ensure equipment used for sedation purposes is properly maintained.
  • Address any emergencies related to sedation and ensure equipment, treatments and protocols for patient rescue are available and appropriately used.
  • Follow ADA Guidelines for the Use of Sedation and General Anesthesia by Dentists.
  • Stay up to date with latest trends and developments in dental anesthesia.
  • Participate in a monthly statewide virtual Dental Community of Practice meeting with other OPWDD dentists to mutually share expertise and collaborate.
  • Be NYS certified in Dental Eternal Conscious Sedation or be willing to become certified.
  • Development of policies and procedures relating to dental care.
  • Arrange training for dental staff.
  • Supervision of subordinate staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

This position will work throughout New York State, covering 6 regions:

  • Western NY / Finger Lakes
  • Broome / Central NY
  • Capital Region / Sunmount (Tupper Lake)
  • Hudson Valley / Taconic
  • Brooklyn / Metro / Staten Island
  • Long Island / Queens

Work location may be at any of the above locations, with paid travel between dental clinics.

Minimum Qualifications

Promotion: Possession of a license and current registration to practice dentistry in New York State, and one year of service as a Dentist 1.

Open Competitive: A valid license and registration to practice dentistry in New York State AND three years of full-time post licensure dentistry experience, one year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity in a dental health care setting.

Transfer Qualifications: Candidates must have permanent competitive status in the posted title and be eligible for lateral transfer.

Preferred Qualifications:

Successful completion of an accredited Dental Anesthesia Training Program. 1. Dental General Anesthesia, 2. Dental Parenteral Conscious Sedation for patients 13 years and older, and 3. Dental Oral Conscious Sedation for patients 13 years and older. Have a current BLS and ACLS certification and current DEA Registration.

  • NYS HELPS

This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). HELPS Program titles may be filled via a non- competitive appointment. This means that you do not need to take an exam to qualify, but you do need to meet the minimum qualifications of the title.

At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), employees hired under NY HELPS are expected to have their permanent non-competitive employment status converted to permanent competitive status. You will not have to take an exam to gain permanent competitive status.

  • If you are currently a New York State employee serving in a permanent competitive qualifying title and eligible for a transfer via Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law, you may be appointed to this title as a permanent competitive employee
  • Preference will be given to OPWDD employees impacted by closures. If you are being impacted by closure, please indicate this on your resume/cover letter.
  • All OPWDD employees must be eligible and maintain eligibility for full and unconditional participation in the Medicare and Medicaid programs. Continued employment will depend on maintaining eligibility.

The PSLF Program forgives the remaining balance on Direct Loans after 120 qualifying monthly payments have been made under a qualifying repayment plan while working full-time for a qualifying employer.
