Job summary

Howard University is seeking a skilled Dental Billing Specialist to analyze clinical information, assign CDT/CPT codes, and support professional dental services billing.

You will review claims generated by axiUm, ensure ADA compliance, monitor accounts receivable, and collaborate with faculty, staff, and insurance carriers.

The role emphasizes accuracy, timely submissions, and process improvements while upholding ethical coding standards.

Qualifications

• Associate’s Degree or equivalent from a 2-year college or completion of a certified coding program with 2–3 years CPT or CDT coding experience.
• Understanding of dental billing and reimbursement for Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance.
• Fluency in CDT (preferred) or CPT coding and documentation standards with ADA and CDT guideline application.
• Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Coding Associate (CCA) preferred.
• Strong communication and organizational skills; presentation and conflict resolution skills are a plus.

Responsibilities

• Maximize cash collections by monitoring and managing open accounts receivable balances.
• Review dental claims generated by axiUm for accuracy and ADA CDT conformity; ensure timely submission to insurers.
• Reconcile insurance company checks against submissions.
• Investigate submission issues and denials, liaise with third-party carriers, and implement process improvements.
• Provide guidance to faculty, students, clinic staff, and axiUm administrators on claim procedures and documentation.
• Generate patient statements and respond to inquiries.
• Create system reports on billing activities and accounts receivable; recommend enhancements.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge on ADA standards, CDT codes, CMS policies, and axiUm.
• Adhere to AHIMA and AAPC ethical standards; perform data entry and other duties as assigned.
