The Dental Assistant supports the dentist in providing high-quality patient care by performing a variety of clinical and administrative tasks. This role includes preparing patients for treatments, sterilizing instruments, preparing rooms, and assisting during dental procedures. The Dental Assistant also manages patient records and educates patients on oral hygiene practices.

Position Responsibilities
  1. Prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations by ensuring all necessary instruments and materials are sterilized and ready for use.
  2. Assist the dentist during a variety of treatment procedures, including learning how to take and develop dental radiographs (x-rays) under supervision.
  3. Provide patients with instructions for oral care following surgery or other dental treatments.
  4. Manage patient records by documenting dental care services and updating treatment plans.
  5. Ensure the comfort of patients by greeting them, answering questions, and providing reassurance during procedures.
  6. Take and record patients' medical and dental histories and vital signs.
  7. Educate patients on proper oral hygiene techniques, such as brushing and flossing, to prevent dental problems.
  8. Apply topical anesthetics to patients' gums before dental procedures.
  9. Follow infection control protocols by disinfecting and maintaining dental instruments and equipment.
  10. Perform all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Graduation from or current enrollment in an accredited dental assisting program, with anticipated graduation within 30 days of hire.
  • Certification as a Dental Assistant (CDA) from the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) or equivalent Oregon state certification must be obtained within six (6) months of hire.
  • Certification in radiography, as required by Oregon regulations, must be obtained within six (6) months of hire.
  • Knowledge of dental terminology, procedures, and instruments.
  • Proficiency in dental practice management software and electronic health records (EHR).
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and maintain attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
  • Understanding of infection control and sterilization protocols to ensure a safe and clean clinical environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate degree or higher in dental assisting or a related field.
  • Proficiency in using dental practice management software.
  • Proficient in both English and Spanish.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA regulations and compliance to ensure patient privacy and confidentiality.
Compensation Details

This is a non-union, non-exempt position with a wage of $19.50 per hour, paid bi-weekly.

Conditional Employment

This position may be offered to candidates who have completed or are within 30 days of completing an accredited dental assisting program but have not yet obtained state or national certification. Continued employment is contingent upon obtaining required certifications, including Oregon radiography certification and Dental Assistant certification (CDA or equivalent), within six (6) months of the date of hire. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment. This position requires successful passage of a State mandated background check.
