Job Description

Position Summary

Dental assistants enhance the efficiency of dentists in delivering quality oral health care and are vital members of the dental team. They provide direct patient care across various dental specialties, including orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, and oral surgery. Responsibilities include assisting the dentist, setting up and maintaining equipment, and preparing patients for treatment from start to finish of their appointment.

Essential Functions

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodations, each essential function satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be provided to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform these functions.

  1. Prepare patients for dental procedures by making them comfortable before, during, and after treatments.
  2. Manage patient flow efficiently.
  3. Set up instrument trays, prepare materials, and assist the dentist during procedures.
  4. Take and expose dental diagnostic x-rays, ensuring proper sensor care.
  5. Record medical and dental histories and vital signs of patients.
  6. Chart treatments in Patient Management Software.
  7. Assist the dentist during management of medical or dental procedures.
  8. Provide preoperative explanations and postoperative instructions as prescribed.
  9. Record treatment information and fabricate temporary restorations or impressions.
  10. Make preliminary impressions for study casts and occlusal registrations.
  11. Prepare study casts, whitening trays, and clean removable appliances.
  12. Apply fluoride and educate patients on oral hygiene.
  13. Ensure proper patient dismissal and handoffs.
  14. Sterilize and disinfect instruments and operatories.
  15. Potentially serve as the Clinical Inventory Administrator and Compliance and Safety Officer, conducting inventory, safety protocols, and staff training.
  16. Adhere to all relevant policies and regulations, including OSHA and HIPAA.
  17. May be required to relocate or perform additional administrative and maintenance tasks as needed.
  18. Maintain regular and reliable attendance.

Skills & Abilities

Education: Completion of Dental Assisting Program or at least one year of experience as a Dental Assistant.

Certifications: Current Dental Assisting Permit, CPR Certification, X-Ray Certification.

Computer Skills: Proficiency in Eaglesoft, Microsoft Office Suite, and other relevant software.

Other Requirements: Valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, compliance with vaccination policies, and understanding of HIPAA, sterilization, and infection control procedures.
