Job Title: Dental Assistant Support Floater

Department: Clinical Operations

Reports To: Practice Manager

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Schedule: Monday through Friday: 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

This is a traveling position supporting Plum Dental's practices between central and northern Rhode Island.

Position Summary

As a Dental Assistant Support, you play a vital role in supporting both the clinical and administrative operations of the practice. You’ll assist chairside during a wide range of dental procedures, maintain clinical readiness and compliance, and ensure patient care is delivered efficiently and compassionately. This position requires flexibility and adaptability, providing coverage and guidance to the practice as needed. You’ll maintain supply inventories, support infection control standards, and serve as a trusted partner to doctors and team members to ensure seamless patient care and operational excellence. When providing administrative support, you’ll assist as a Patient Coordinator, helping patients with scheduling, insurance verification, check‑in/out, and treatment‑related communication—ensuring every interaction is welcoming, organized, and professional.

Key Responsibilities
Clinical Support
  • Assist the dentist during procedures including restorations, crown and bridge, extractions, endodontic and prosthodontic treatments.
  • Take accurate dental impressions, pour models, and fabricate temporary crowns, bleaching trays, and other appliances.
  • Record clinical notes, chart existing conditions, and enter treatment plans into patient records.
  • Prepare, sterilize, and organize instruments and materials following OSHA and infection control protocols.
  • Provide clear pre‑ and post‑operative instructions and explain procedures to ensure patient comfort and understanding.
Laboratory Coordination
  • Send, track, and receive lab cases, ensuring clear communication with dental laboratories.
  • Maintain accurate records of lab cases and ensure timely delivery for patient appointments.
Inventory & Supply Management
  • Manage dental supply orders within budget guidelines.
  • Maintain organized operatories and monitor supply usage to prevent shortages.
  • Collaborate with practice leaders to identify cost‑saving opportunities and ensure readiness for daily operations.
Team Communication & Patient Relations
  • Partner with administrative staff to coordinate patient treatment, follow‑up appointments, and scheduling.
  • Provide warm, empathetic, and professional interactions with all patients and colleagues.
  • Follow up with patients as needed to ensure post‑treatment satisfaction and address concerns.
Compliance & Maintenance
  • Adhere to OSHA and infection control standards to maintain a safe clinical environment.
  • Support equipment maintenance and routine operatory upkeep.
  • Uphold all office policies to ensure consistency and safety across locations.
Administrative Support
Patient Experience & Communication
  • Greet and assist patients warmly, creating a positive and professional first impression.
  • Respond to calls and inquiries, providing accurate information and directing calls appropriately.
  • Support treatment plan discussions, financing coordination, and follow‑up scheduling when needed.
Appointment & Insurance Coordination
  • Schedule and confirm appointments in CareStack (or other PMS) to maximize patient flow.
  • Verify insurance coverage, collect co‑pays, and support accurate claim processing.
  • Maintain accurate patient demographics and consent forms in compliance with HIPAA.
Front Office & Operational Support
  • Monitor front office supplies, maintain organized workspaces, and assist with administrative tasks as needed.
  • Collaborate with Practice Managers to ensure a smooth, coordinated patient experience across locations.
Qualifications
  • Completion of an accredited Dental Assisting program preferred.
  • Active Radiology Certification required.
  • Current CPR certification and OSHA compliance training required.
  • Strong knowledge of dental terminology, infection control, and clinical protocols.
  • Proficiency in dental software and digital charting systems.
