The Registered Dental Assistant works within a hospital outpatient dental environment and may be exposed to blood saliva bodily fluids bloodborne pathogens infectious materials sharps dental materials chemicals radiation associated with dental imaging and other occupational hazards inherent to the clinical dental setting The employee is required to consistently follow applicable infection prevention standard precautions personal protective equipment radiation safety hazardous material handling occupational safety and Jersey City Medical Center and RWJBarnabas Health policies and procedures

A typical day for a registered dental assistant technician may include:
  • Providing direct patient care support within authorized scope including clinical intake obtaining and documenting vital signs and relevant patient history performing authorized dental radiography preparing patients for examinations and procedures and assisting with patient positioning mobility or transfers as needed.
  • Providing chairside assistance to dentists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons residents and other authorized providers during dental examinations and procedures including preparing instruments materials equipment and treatment areas and reinforcing provider-directed patient instructions as appropriate.
  • Supporting efficient patient flow and daily hospital outpatient dental clinic operations by monitoring schedules escorting patients preparing treatment and procedure rooms coordinating with clinical and front end staff and appropriately breaking down disinfecting and resetting rooms between patients
  • Maintaining operatories dental laboratory areas sterilization areas dental radiography areas supply areas cabinets equipment and other clinical workspaces in a clean organized appropriately stocked safe and patient ready condition consistent with hospital departmental infection prevention and regulatory standards
  • Performing instrument processing, cleaning, disinfection, packaging, sterilization storage and associated quality control activities in accordance with established infection prevention practices, manufacturer instructions hospital and departmental policies and applicable regulatory requirements, including completion of required sterilization documentation and logs
  • Performing routine dental equipment and operatory maintenance within assigned responsibilities including cleaning suction lines maintaining handpieces and unit components according to established procedures and manufacturer instructions maintaining properly stocked dental trays and instrument areas and promptly reporting equipment malfunctions damage or safety concerns.
  • Maintaining appropriate inventory and par levels of dental and clinical supplies including receiving organizing stocking and rotating supplies monitoring expiration dates identifying shortages and ensuring expired or unusable medications materials and supplies are removed and handled according to institutional policy.
  • Performing assigned dental laboratory support activities within authorized scope and demonstrated competency including pouring impressions trimming study models preparing laboratory cases and packaging and coordinating laboratory case shipment or pickup.
  • Handling sharps amalgam lead foil regulated medical waste chemicals dental materials and other hazardous or regulated materials in accordance with applicable safety requirements and consistently follows standard precautions personal protective equipment radiation safety bloodborne pathogen exposure control and occupational safety procedures.
  • Providing clinical and administrative documentation support within authorized scope including maintaining accurate medical and dental records obtaining and appropriately routing reports and referral information completing assigned forms and requisitions and supporting provider directed orders or prescription related workflows in accordance with hospital policy and applicable scope of practice requirements
  • Supporting patient scheduling registration insurance verification precertification referral and procedural coordination as assigned including updating patient demographic and insurance information and assisting with procedure or surgical scheduling preadmission documentation and consent related workflows in accordance with departmental and hospital requirements.
  • Maintaining compliance with all Jersey City Medical Center and RWJBarnabas Health policies and applicable federal and New Jersey requirements related to patient safety infection prevention patient confidentiality documentation radiation safety occupational safety scope of practice and hospital outpatient operations Participates in required education competency validation staff meetings and departmental activities and performs other duties as assigned within the scope of the position.
This role might be for you if:
  • Current Registered Dental Assistant credential in the State of New Jersey as required for the position
  • Current New Jersey dental radiography credential or license as applicable required to perform dental radiographic procedures.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification including cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator training required
  • Minimum of two years of relevant dental office or clinical dental assisting experience preferred.
