Position Objective

Working under general supervision, the Dental Assistant 1 supports residents and faculty in the Periodontal Department at the School of Dental Medicine. Main duties include surgical assistance and managing supplies and equipment.

Essential Functions
  • Provide sterilized instruments and equipment for residents. (25%)
  • Assist chair-side for faculty, residents, and hygienists when residents are in class. (15%)
  • Dispense supplies, instruments, and equipment to residents for efficient patient treatment. (15%)
  • Monitor usage of dental and office supplies, prepare reorders, and obtain approvals. (6%)
  • Prepare the clinic for daily schedule, assist with cleaning, stock supplies, and maintain sterile water. (10%)
Nonessential Functions
  • Verify patient payment proofs for procedures. (5%)
  • Follow up on insurance pretreatment estimates. (5%)
  • Ensure equipment is functional and arrange repairs. (5%)
  • Complete and report forms, report deficiencies. (5%)
  • Help manage clinic schedule for patient flow. (2%)
  • Take dental radiographs. (2%)
  • Record reports and forms in patient records. (2%)
  • Maintain MSDS sheets. (1%)
  • Maintain emergency equipment and assist with resuscitation. (1%)
  • Inform residents about clinic procedures during orientation. (1%)

Other duties as assigned.

Contacts

Daily contact with clinic staff, faculty, residents, and patients to exchange information and resolve issues.

Supervisory Responsibilities

No staff supervision.

Qualifications
  • Minimum 3 months of dental assisting experience.
  • High school diploma, Certified Dental Assistant, Ohio radiology certification, CPR certification.
Required Skills
  • Basic computer skills, insurance knowledge, proficiency with Microsoft Office, dental sterilization expertise.
  • Strong support, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to maintain attendance and interact professionally.
Working Conditions

Work in a clinical setting with exposure to biohazards, sharps, and chemicals. Use of PPE required. Safety protocols are in place, but hazards may exist during certain procedures.
