Under the direct supervision of the director of dentistry,

1. Employee will be dually supervised by the dentist at their assigned institution.
2. Assist with providing dental care to patients in their assigned clinic and statewide, as needed.
3. Prepare patients for treatment and provide chairside assistance for all dental procedures.
4. Operate dental equipment necessary for patient care and treatment.
5. Expose, develop, and mount/file dental x-rays; prepare and maintain dental x-ray developing solutions.
6. Maintain dental equipment by cleaning and lubricating dental handpieces, suction lines, etc.; clean work areas and sterilize instruments and equipment.
7. Prepare and mix various fillings and impression materials.
8. Perform clinical laboratory procedures.
9. Conduct prophylaxis and oral hygiene instruction as needed.
10. Schedule dental appointments.
11. Maintain dental patient records.
12. Manage the inventory of the clinic's dental supplies and request additional supplies as needed.
13. Keep statistical reports on clinical activities and perform administrative/clerical duties as necessary.
14. Assist with providing dental care to other dental clinics statewide, as instructed/needed.

Minimum Requirements

State of South Carolina: An associate degree in Dental Assistance or one year of formal training in an ADA-accredited dental assistance course.

SCDC Minimum Requirements: (Or an acceptable equivalence as approved by the Division of State Human Resources)

• A high school diploma and experience or training within the specific work area.
• One (1) year of formal training in an ADA-accredited assistant's course and one (1) year of dental assistant experience.
• OR a high school graduate with one (1) year of dental assistant experience with certification in dental x-ray.
