Job Description: Dental Assistant

Under the direct supervision of the director of dentistry,

• Employee will be dually supervised by the dentist at their assigned institution.
• Assist with providing dental care to patients in their assigned clinic and statewide, as needed.
• Prepare patients for treatment and provide chairside assistance for all dental procedures.
• Operate dental equipment necessary for patient care and treatment.
• Expose, develop, and mount/file dental x-rays; prepare and maintain dental x-ray developing solutions.
• Maintain dental equipment by cleaning and lubricating dental handpieces, suction lines, etc.; clean work areas and sterilize instruments and equipment.
• Prepare and mix various fillings and impression materials.
• Perform clinical laboratory procedures.
• Perform prophylaxis and oral hygiene instruction as needed.
• Schedule dental appointments.
• Maintain dental patient records.
• Manage the inventory of the clinic's dental supplies and request additional supplies as needed.
• Keep statistical reports on clinical activities and perform administrative/clerical duties as necessary.
• Assist with providing dental care to other clinics statewide, as instructed/needed.

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:

An associate degree in Dental Assistance or one year of formal training in a dental assistance course accredited by the American Dental Association.

SCDC Minimum Requirements:

High school diploma and experience or training within the specific work area. One year of formal training in an ADA-accredited assistant's course and one year of dental assistant experience.

OR

A high school graduate with one year of dental assistant experience and certification in dental x-ray.
