Job Description

PURPOSE OF POSITION

Under the direct clinical supervision of the Dentist, the dental assistant reports directly to the Dentist for clinical matters and the dental manager in areas that pertain to administration oversight. This collaborate oversight of the Dental Assistant ensures quality patient care.

Areas Of Responsibilities

  • Opens and closes dental clinic as per the facility policies
  • Receives patients and facilitates the prompt seating of patients for dental care
  • Prepare patients for examination and treatment.
  • Prepares operatory with hand pieces attached and appropriate tray set-up
  • Assists dentists by handing them required instruments for treatment of patients and charting in Dentrix.
  • Disinfects surface areas and maintains clinic and clinic equipment in a hygienic condition, in accordance with infection control procedures.
  • Performs dental x-rays and prepares the patient using appropriate shielding as requested by the Dentist. (Placing sensors and exposing digital x-rays)
  • Maintains adequate level of supplies and instruments in the operatory
  • Cleans and/or lubricates instruments used in patient care prior to sterilization
  • Mixes amalgams, cements, composites and other materials.
  • Performs laboratory procedures, such as pouring of models, logging of case in and out, and preparing lab, RX and follow-up.
  • Send out/transport contaminated instruments and receives sterilized instruments used in patient care appropriately
  • Supplying necessary dental supplies and reporting equipment repairs
  • Provide patient education adequately and appropriately.
  • Uses Dentrix and Epic as per established guidelines
  • Assist in outreach programs and dental health fairs.
  • Register patients in Dentrix and EPIC.
  • Schedule appointments in person /via phone in Dentrix.
  • Calling patients to cancel and reschedule appointments.
  • Update patient demographics in EPIC I Dentrix.
  • Answer phone appropriately.
  • Translate as needed.
  • Provide rotating coverage for Saturday clinic.
  • Upholds the Mission of the Corporation in demonstrating the commitment to provide safe, high quality healthcare to patients
  • Uses effective, courteous communication when working with persons, supervisors, and the public
  • Knowledgeable of the Corporation’ policies and procedures
  • Observes all infection control policies. Uses proper hand washing techniques

Minimum Qualifications

  • A four-year High School diploma or its educational equivalent, including or supplemented by successful completion of an accredited or approved Dental Assistant Program, which included or was supplemented by 600 hours of supervised internship experience assisting a dentist at chairside; or
  • A four-year High School diploma or its educational equivalent, including or supplemented by successful completion of an accredited or approved Dental Assistant Program, which included or was supplemented by 300 hours of supervised internship experience assisting a dentist at chairside; and 6 (six) months of satisfactory full-time experience as a Dental Assistant performing all of the following duties: taking and uploading dental digital imaging, assisting dentist at chairside, and preparing dental instruments for sterilization; or
  • A four-year High School diploma or its educational equivalent; and one (1) year of satisfactory full-time experience as a Dental Assistant performing the duties described in “2” above; or
  • A satisfactory combination of education and experience which is equivalent to “1”, “2”, or “3” above. Each 100 hours of supervised internship experience assisting a dentist at chairside is equivalent to two (2) months of full-time experience. However, all candidates must have at least a four-year High School diploma or its educational equivalent.

Experience as a receptionist or clerk in a dentist’s office is not acceptable towards meeting the qualification requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB:

Educational Level

  • High School graduate or evidence high school equivalency program (GED) certificate with a score of at least 35 on each of the five tests and an overall score of at least 225 in the examination for the diploma or certificate including or supplemented by a course of study of at least 900 instructional hours at a school for dental assistants approved by the New York State educational Department or by the National Association for Trade and Technical Schools or
  • High school graduation or equivalent as described in (1.) above plus one year of full-time paid experience as a dental assistant; or
  • A satisfactory combination of education and experience which is equivalent to "l ", "2", or "3" above including or supplemented by a course of study consisting of at least 600 instructional hours at an approved school for Dental assistants.
