Summary
The Dental Assistant assists the dentist in many aspects of direct patient care and performs other clinical and clerical functions independently under direct supervision.
Qualifications Basic Requirements:
- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
- Experience and Education: Experience or education as specified below
- Experience: Six months experience demonstrating the ability to perform the work or familiarity with the work
- OR - Education: Successful completion of a 1-year dental assistant program accredited by the American Dental Association's CODA
- OR - Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combinations are qualifying
- Certification: Must meet radiologic procedure credentialing standards as per Public Law 97-35 and 42 CFR Part 75, including completion of a recognized educational program and certification as radiographers
- Provisions for Certification of Radiologic Competence: Options include passing the Dental Radiation Health and Safety Examination, or courses/examinations approved by relevant authorities
- English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English
Grade Determinations:
- GS-3: Basic requirements only
- GS-4: 1 year of experience at GS-3 level or 2 years of education including an accredited dental assistant program, plus demonstrated KSAs
- GS-5: 1 year of experience at GS-4 level or completion of a 4-year dental assistant course, plus KSAs including knowledge of anatomy and emergency procedures
- GS-6: 1 year of experience at GS-5 level demonstrating core competencies, plus advanced KSAs including ability to interpret vital signs and perform complex procedures
Additional notes: The full performance level is GS-6, and applicants may be selected from GS-3 to GS-6. Pre-employment evaluations are required, and questions about physical demands or environmental factors may be addressed during evaluation.
