Summary
Dental Assistants at this level serve staff dental assistants at the full performance level for routine patient care and perform some complex patient procedures under general supervision of more experienced dental assistants or dental supervisor. They assist the dentist in many aspects of direct patient care and perform other clinical and clerical functions independently.
Qualifications
Applicants pending completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- Experience and Education: (1) Six months experience demonstrating ability or familiarity with the work; or (2) Successful completion of a 1-year dental assistant program accredited by the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA); or (3) Equivalent combinations of experience and education are qualifying.
- Certification: Must meet radiologic procedures credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75, including successful completion of relevant examinations or courses. Certification in basic life support is highly desirable. DANB certification is highly desirable but not required for appointment; required for positions above full performance level.
- English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Grade Determinations: GS-6 Staff Dental Assistant
- At least 1 year of experience demonstrating core competencies.
- Technical KSAs include ability to identify normal oral anatomy, knowledge of instruments and procedures, monitor vital signs, provide patient education, capture dental images, perform equipment maintenance, and manage electronic records.
- Assignment at this level includes assisting with specialty procedures, using four-handed dentistry, and performing laboratory procedures.
Physical Requirements:
Light lifting and carrying, use of both hands, reaching above shoulders, walking, standing, sitting, depth perception, rapid mental and muscular coordination.
Duties

- Responsibilities include customer service, chairside assisting, dental imaging, direct patient care, infection control, laboratory functions, clerical tasks, information management, patient safety, employee education, and other duties as needed.
