Cook

Position Objective: To produce, execute, and deliver outstanding prepared foods in freshness, taste, quality, and presentation in a timely and efficient manner. Assist in all aspects of the deli to ensure a team that delivers the product and service customers expect.

Reporting Structure: This position reports to the Deli Manager.

Status: Non-exempt position.

Knowledge

The following are certifications, education, or training requirements:

  • A food handling permit must be obtained within 14 days of employment.
  • Completion of ongoing training as per Cosentino’s Learning Plan.
  • Minimum one year of cooking experience in a deli, bakery, catering, or banquet operation.
  • Minimum 6 months experience in deli or food service production.
  • Understanding of federal, state, and local food sanitation guidelines.

Preferred:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
Skills

Basic skills required include:

  • Developing menu items with the department manager.
  • Practicing appropriate portion control.
  • Preparing foods in accordance with safety, health, sanitation, and quality standards.
  • Enforcing quality control measures.
  • Supervising kitchen staff effectively and respectfully.
  • Promoting teamwork and morale.
  • Training and managing part-time cooks.
  • Communicating clearly with team members and customers.
  • Managing inventory and product rotation.
  • Answering customer questions accurately.
  • Meeting productivity standards.
  • Promoting sales and customer service standards.
  • Operating and maintaining equipment safely.
  • Following recipes, menus, and promotional standards.
  • Demonstrating basic math and reading skills.
Non-Essential Job Functions
  • Preparing, packaging, and labeling products.
  • Maintaining cleanliness and setup of coolers and preparation areas.
  • Unloading and stocking shipments.
  • Supporting management and other departments as needed.
Physical Abilities

Employees should be able to perform physical movements such as:

  • Reaching, twisting, lifting up to 20 lbs.
  • Pushing and pulling items up to 50 lbs.
  • Standing and walking for long periods.
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs occasionally.
  • Bending and working in cold conditions.
